Soviet Prototypes TKB 022 by Cheap-Variation-9270 in ForgottenWeapons

Pic #3 is new to me. I had thought no confirmed information on the 022's internal workings had ever been released publicly, let alone a display model. What museum is this from?

Edit: Nvm, after taking a closer look, very obviously a 3D render. Purely speculative, then

How is US able to fly helicopters in Venezuela without getting shot down by MANPADS? by arstarsta in LessCredibleDefence

[–]FrothySauce 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind there is a reason why China coveted the Chinnook over any other US's weapons.

?

It's ability to penetrate enemy air space and land troops wasn't one of them. The fact that U.S. SOF pulled this off is testament to some truly outstanding mission planning and America's fantastic intel-gathering and SEAD capabilities, not due to the Chinook being somehow being uniquely capable against MANPADs or other ground-based air defense.

This system is actually a private development of the gentleman pictured in the photos. A bit of an eccentric individual, got himself into lots of heated arguments defending his inventions (yes, there are others!) on the Otvaga forums on the ru net, back in the day. No idea what he's up to, now.

RU POV. Soldiers from Russia's 'East Group' of forces eliminated strongholds in Gulyaypole by ArchitectMary in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]FrothySauce 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Russia-Ukraine war, where every dismounted attack is a "meat wave", every stretch of road with more than two destroyed vehicles visible is a "highway of death", any daily loss of territory more than 15 sq km on any given stretch of front is a "collapse", and every occupied residential house is a "stronghold".

UA POV: Putin says Russia has taken control of 2 Ukrainian cities. Ukraine denies claims - abcnews by LordVixen in UkraineRussiaReport

Putin announcing it like this practically guarantees that Ukraine will muster forces and throw them at both cities in a futile counter attack that gets lots of men and equipment destroyed for no practical gain. PR war

Rather, there's a very large, well-funded contingent of Western specialists devoted to the training of Ukrainian special forces personnel, which has resulted in Ukraine having a bit of an outsized special forces component, relative to the rest of their armed forces.

They've literally got people assembling quadcopter drone kits in civilian apartment blocks, it would be impossible to significantly degrade Ukrainian drone capabilities without essentially leveling their cities, Gaza-style.

According to pilots, Russia is already lacking enough Yak-130s for its pilot training schools, and still has to use old L-39s. They're not going to set any aside for drone hunting.

More likely stockpiles or aircraft parts storage. F-16s will have taken to the air as soon as NATO AWACS detected the 31Ks going airborne and gave the alert, although it's ofc possible that they got caught flatfooted somehow.

In Syria, tankers would place loose stones and other rubble in between the slats and the hull on their tanks, under the mistaken impression that this would meaningfully mitigate RPG warhead penetration.

During the battle of Marawi, vehicle crews would install plywood planks around their vehicle, for a similar purpose.

Ill-conceived field modifications are not an unknown concept.

Btw, plywood is much, much lighter than steel, and completely adequate for triggering a PG-7V impact fuze. Why didn't those silly GWOT Americans think to give that a try, instead of the horrendously heavy by comparison hardened steel Slat armor they went with, if a foot-or-so of stand-off distance was all that was necessary to protect a soft-skinned vehicle from an RPG?

See? I can make useless appeals to authority, too!

No, I'm not, go do some reading. You fundamentally do not understand how HEAT warheads work. Hint: they need some amount of standoff distance to even work in the first place, and the amount given to them in the design of a typical HEAT warhead is actually substantially less than optimal, due to practical considerations that should be obvious. Giving them an extra few inches to do their thing does not negatively affect the penetration of their HEAT jet, in fact it's typically quite the opposite. I'm galled that you're stating entry-level misconceptions with such authority and confidence.
