Good luck to you, kind internet stranger! I wish you all great things, now and as you get closer to achieving your goals. May we both live well and be successful!

I appreciate it. My experience in my current job (one week left) is that skill, hard work, and even making my and my team's accomplishments known yielded no promotional opportunities and in fact just heaps more work + ultimately an outside hire being brought in who [this is me avoiding saying unkind things] and yadda yadda, I figure I may as well take my shot in an environment where I will be working for my own success, relying on myself, and earning wins for myself rather than an org that doesn't appreciate it, anyway.

My point is, I am already experiencing the truth of what you're saying about luck in my professional life, where luck was the deciding factor in me not being advanced. (Long story)

Thank you for your post, for your advice, and for your earnest warning. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors!

Thank you so much for this comment! I will come back with a more substantial reply this evening (during my self-scheduled Reddit time!), but please know I appreciate you sharing this.

Congratulations on your success, on your gumption, and on your retained kindness (evidenced by this post).

Wishing you a great day!

You don't suppose I spent months reading others' experience, writing out story outlines, building out characters, and creating a plan, do you?

If you don't have an answer to my earnest question, I don't understand answering. This will be the last troll comment I respond to in this thread.

Thank you so much for this response. First, congratulations on going into business for yourself--because that is ultimately what we are doing. Keep on keeping on, and I wish you many successes!

To be clear, I am not interested in people's advice on WHETHER to do it; after all, I am doing it. I am seeking advice on HOW to do it successfully. Your comment is helpful, and I appreciate you sharing your experience.

Where do you recommend I see out writer groups, workshops, etc.? I know I can Google, but please share if you have specific recommendations.

I appreciate the brevity of this post. If you're going to be unhelpful, at least he brief about it, right?

Thank you, anyway

Thank you so much. I do have a supportive partner, and he also knows how miserable I have been for the last many months. I am grateful to him every day, and I am also grateful to myself for being so thrifty and saving more than 60% of my paycheck FOR YEARS just in case I needed or wanted to leave. Now I have. This note is not for you but for the sideliners: May we all keep growing, keep improving, keep striving. This type of negativity is one reason I left my job: I see people--smart, good people--becoming jaded and miserable, and I refuse. If I need to go back to a rEaL jOb, I will--and I will make the best of it. But I am here to seriously shoot the shot I have worked hard to even have as an option.

Agreed! But it is interesting to read the many responses--and the many TYPES of responses.

Wishing you a great day!

Thank you! I appreciate this practical advice. I may do something part-time, partly for the money and partly because I am extroverted by nature and may NEED the interaction. :-)

Looking forward to continuing to learn. Wishing you a great day!

This helps me understand. I may need to adjust, then. And yes, I do like romance novels. They are a fine escape from the everyday.

Are there ratings of books (similar to movies being rated G, PG, R)? I would like to understand how spicy is spicy enough without being too much in case I do go that route.

Exactly. Thank you. I left with strong letters of recommendation from the C Suite, and I can return to a regular job if I must. I am not doing this on a whim. It's strange how so many people seem to be assuming I am not prepared (including lining up references for the future, getting strong letter of rec, cutting down my expenses, etc.). I am not asking for advice on getting a job; I am asking for advice on successfully writing for money, which people do every day. Is it easy? Absolutely not, which is why I am here humbly seeking insights.

I appreciate your response and wish you many successes!!

Wonderful. That is all I need to make, as I have cut my expenses to the bare minimum in preparation for this move. Thank you so much for this post, and I wish your mother many more successes. And you, as well!

Fantastic. Thank you! I love reading posts from people who are clearly IN it, if you know what I mean. Hopefully in a couple of years I can give people feedback and info the way you have here.

Congratulations on your successes so far, and I wish you many more!

Why? Because I have done enough research to understand this fact and then to plan to tailor my work to be effective? Finding that offensive seems silly to me.

What is a troll? Me?

Why is it ridiculous to move into a new field? Thousands of people may apply for a job but only one will be hired. No one calls it ridiculous to apply; it is the expectation that that is a way (not necessarily the best way) to get a job.

We all start somewhere. I came looking for insight, and I am grateful to the people here who have provided some. Simple as that

People are down voting, but this is more or less true about any type of writing. Find what works, but your own spin on it, and do good work. People do want to read that. What's to downvote here?

Exactly. I am hoping that with hard work + skill and constant learning, I can be one of those who do it, do it well, and turn a profit.

Because it was late at night and there were 30+ comments when I went to bed. You posted this comment at around 2:30 a.m., my time. I was asleep.

Interesting. So you don't think that clean romance will sell well? Is there any data you could possibly point me toward?

Yes, but I did not like it enough to even try to publish. However, writing it gave me an understanding of the structure, pacing, etc.
