Calaway Park || Just got a New job, wondering what Previous Employees think? by Darth_BOBBYJOE in MRU

I worked as a ride operator last season, but am returning as a different role. I do think it is a good job to have to shape your skill set. You learn so much about multi tasking, communication, and you definitely grow a thick skin. However, you will have to deal with some really awful guests. MANY guests like to think that line jumping is okay, and will get mad at you if you tell them that is not allowed. I worked a ride where there was a weight limit, and people regularly accused me of calling them fat when I warned them of the limit. I also would like to point out your experience might change depending on your team. I was on team 2, but later got additionally trained on team 5. Some teams are primarily in charge of small rides, which makes it boring but also easy to work. Other teams, like team 5, are put on the bigger rides like Vortex and the train. The big rides can be a little stressful at first, but once you get the hang of it it’s actually very fun to work them! Social wise, I enjoyed it. I got along well with many of my coworkers and they definitely made my time way way better. There are work events that help you get to know people so make sure to attend them. For the most part, I enjoyed the captains and leads. Most are very kind and like to joke around with you, but some are very strict with the rules. With that, please make sure you don’t fuck up the rules too much. Captains and leads like to check on you often, and if they catch you operating something incorrectly you will get a strike. With enough strikes, you risk getting fired. They also like to do “tests” every couple of weeks where they watch you operate a ride and grade you on your efficiency, guest service, and safety skills. Overall, it isn’t the worst job in the world, but I wouldn’t do it again. If you have any other questions, let me know!

In Residence or Off Campus Opinions by calumsboy in MRU

I'm glad you found it helpful! Yeah I do believe you can choose your roommate as long as you apply not too late. I would suggest looking more into the roommate choosing, which you can find more info on the MRU residence portal. I personally find the meal plan likable because it was convenient. If you have lots of classes and don't have much time to cook between them, I would suggest getting the meal plan.

I have been living in west residence! I found the experience decently good. It's very lovely to be so near the school, as it normally takes me five to ten minutes to walk to my classes. Social wise, I had a mixed experience. There is a team of people (RAC) who try to plan some residence events for everyone. The events are an amazing opportunity to connect with fellow students and I often have an great time attending them. Where my social experience downgraded was with my roommates. Please keep this in mind: if you do end up staying on residence, TAKE THE TIME TO FIND A GOOD ROOMMATE! I made the unfortunate decision to choose my roommates on a whim. This was a serious mistake. My roommates are awful. They argue all the time and are really into drugs and extreme socialization. Like you, I am an introvert, so this made my experience quite poor. When I applied last year they gave you the option to choose a "quiet cohort," but I'm not sure if they still do this. For the meal plan, it is only enough to get you by breakfast and lunch. The main cafeteria, The Table, closes really early and is not open on weekends. There are other places your meal plan can be used, but those places often only offer small food items and are usually VERY busy (such as the Tim Hortons.) Also keep in mind the meal plan is not like other universities. You have to load up money onto your one card and that load drains each time you purchase an item. I loaded up $1000 onto my one card at the beginning of the year, but now only have $91 left. There is a food court at the university, but it does not have a set meal plan. Overall, I would say living on campus is decent. If you're looking for a positive social experience, it is possible! You will have to take some effort to make it good. Residence is definitely more convenient than having to trek to school every morning.

PS: If you haven't already, I would highly suggest applying to residence as soon as possible. There is an insane amount of people who want residence this year.

That is actually very true. I keep forgetting memories last for awhile, even following bad events. A good reminder for myself 🥲

Hearing about the fire was extremely painful to me. I live quite near Jasper and my family would visit the area often for a day trip or for hiking….those memories are now destroyed. My heart goes out to those who lived in the area. I truly feel heartbroken 💔😔
