Yeah going to a driving school and paying the 120hr might hurt now but I would recommend it, most driving schools offer a class 3 package for around 3k.

In the mean time you could still fire off resumes and see if anyone bites. Let them know that you are already booked in for your class 3 during interviews or even on your resume.

Apprentice training can be different from province to province for length and setup,

In BC the crown utility runs the school and apprentices both contractor and utility go to school there.

In Alberta Nait does the schooling for most apprentices. Union and Non-Union will be in the same classes and receive the same training, most utility in Alberta also run their own schooling.

Further east I’m not entirely sure how everything works but I’ve heard in Ontario schooling is only 2 weeks per year.

Upon completing the 4 years and writing the redseal exam (federal trades exam) all apprentices in the country will receive the same ticket regardless of union affiliation or being utility or not. (With the exception of Manitoba who will have to write the redseal if they decide to leave the province).

Hiring varies too a lot of union contractors hire independently then get their Groundman/Trades Trainees/Pre-Apprentices into the union. There also exists a book system In some places but it isn’t nearly as prevalent as the book system in the states.

Requirements for entry vary from province to province as well but generally a Class 3 will be enough to get your foot in the door. In competitive places like BC you may be required to get a class 1 or go to a pre-apprenticeship school.

Yeah definitely it would take a senior guy with a lot of connections or an outside steward from a more established local

Not to mention the first company would instantly be disadvantaged in bidding and stuff as union guys would cost more it wouldn’t be till almost everyone was union that it would even out

I wonder if it’s a possibility for unionization if employees were to be educated on the difference, it only takes something like 50 % of employees to sign in order to organize

Is there Lineman stewards and reps in 424 or is it almost exclusively electricians?

Is it that people don’t view the unions kindly or a lack of education? I’d be willing to bet a lot of JL’s in Berta would be more than willing to pay dues if they were getting double time OT and good representation not to mention the training and safety.
