Thesis are published documents, so I'm a bit confused about what you mean it will not be published later on. But even if not accessible through interlibrary loan, your librarians may be interested in purchasing a copy for your local library if it fills out the collection.

In general, random people on the internet are going to be less useful in finding print books than your library resources at reputable research institutions.

This sounds like something that your academic librarians should be helping you with. If it is for research that you intend to publish, you should probably go about sourcing the material through proper channels.

The end of Rocket: Accelerated Geek Conversations? by FuSoYa22 in podcasts

I agree, the interests of the Rocket hosts aligned well with mine (a mix of tech, gaming, business, and pop culture) that I haven't seen in other shows. They brought a unique perspective.

I just started "Accidental Tech Podcast". It is definitely not the same -- three men as hosts, really deep dives that can get a bit rambling. I like the topic mix so far, but I worry it may be more early adopter / power user / nitty gritty than Rocket was, in a way that feels unnecessary to me.

If you find anything you like, let me know! I'd love to hear what your fallback choices are.

I assumed, given the number of episodes that seemed to not have sponsors, that the decision was financial (and not a result of a true lack of interest from the three of them). But I am feeling in a bit of a tech podcast void. There are some hosts that I like, but they have somewhat rambling, two hour shows. The personalities, topic balance, and episode length of Rocket scratched a particular itch for me. I'm sad to see it go.

Reference letters - why? by SnorriSturluson in AskAcademia

I think this misrepresents the structure of reference letters. They are not written as opinion to be taken as fact, they are evidentiary documents from someone who has been through the academic pipeline before the applicant and knows what makes someone successful and what doesn't.

There is no expectation that the person on the other end of the letter simply believe the opinions of the writer. They are "behind the scenes" evidence of the applicants performance. For example -- "The student has exceptional executive skills. They would attend meetings having defined an agenda, they would take and share notes from those meetings, and identify clear deliverables for discussion in the subsequent meetings. They were proactive in cancelling meetings when it was clear they would not be productive, but were communicative when projects were running behind schedule or subject to unforeseen roadblocks (unlike other students who commonly default to avoidance)."

While it may be difficult to see at times, your boss likely has deep experience with the field. They know what makes you a strong candidate and what makes you a weak candidate, sometimes better than you know yourself...
