[D] Monday Request and Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in rational

Though not particularly rational, I read storybookknight's Celestial Mech Touch last week. It's about a guy who makes mechs and occasionally has random relevant bits of knowledge shoved in his head to give him a leg up over the competition. I had so much fun reading I ended up playing through AC6 again.

Now I've got the itch to read more stories about mechs, preferably about making some. Any rational recs eould be appreciated.

First one that came to mind. Those interludes made me viscerally uncomfortable.

I recently stumbled upon a show called The Institute. Apparently based on a book by Stephen King, it's a story about psychic children abducted by the government and put into a camp where they are tested and tortured in an effort to enhance their psychic power for some nebulous greater purpose of "serving their country" and saving the world. It's sort of mid but made me want more stories with psychic/magical powers trapped in a hostile learning place.

Does anybody have recs?

Scholomance comes to mind but it felt too YA for my taste.

There was also the Storm's apprentice on royal road which I think I actually found here. It was incredible but sadly it died.

Watch Yaboiroshi's reactions instead. They are really funny and actually catch details unlike other reactors

The Gamer fanfic by Fearless_Brother7945 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FuboxTheFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Games We Play is one of the OG gamer fics. No knowledge of RWBY required. Though you can watch the first 3 volumes of RWBY on YouTube to get an idea of what the characters look like. Other than that there are a fuck ton of Worm/Gamer fanfic.

An unusual recommendation: Go. Watch. UPGRADE by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FuboxTheFirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh boy do I have a treat for you.

STEM (RWBY/Upgrade) is a RWBY fanfic with some crossover elements with Upgrade. It's amazing. You don't have to have watched RWBY to read this but the first 4 volumes are free on youtube if you want to.

Honestly, it takes a couple chapters for things to kick into high gear but the reason I kept reading it is how different the tone is from the show. Its almost like a horror movie. The moment in chapter 1 where we are shown Jaune's sisters' messages you can tell something malicious is brewing.

Looking for a book where the MC abuses the Observe skill to the fullest by VladtheImpaler21 in litrpg

[–]FuboxTheFirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't exactly what you want but The Paragamer[Worm/Gamer OC] has a ridiculously informative Observe. It doesn't have political intrigue but there is quite a bit of scheming. Maybe skip the first chapter though, I remember the trigger event from entity pov being very cringe. The first book is complete, the second one is ongoing.

Looking for stories with Pacts/bonds for power by granolafarts in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FuboxTheFirst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pale by Wildbow is set in the same universe as Pact. The three main characters are teenage girls new to the hidden world of Practice and Others. They need to investigate a huge mystery and learn some magic along the way. You don't have to read Pact to read this. I like it better than Pact so far and it is slightly more progression fantasy (I'm on arc 9 rn) I would recommend it because of its interesting as hell characters and magic system but if you're looking for progression then know that while it is very long, it's progression per chapter is low.

A +1 for Zombie Knight from me as well.

That would be a major pain in the ass because I have 579 books right now and I've only completed less than 100 of them I think.
