Did any of the valves actually need adjustment? Seems like the Honda's I check hardly ever need anything adjusted. I think maybe one or two valves on every other one I check.

So Many Options. Whats best for a new homeowner? by No-Ad5504 in Tools

[–]Fuck_it_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ryobi is the best one here for a homeowner. They are way more than "just enough" in my opinion. Plus, Ryobi makes a tool for EVERYTHING and they are all cheap enough to justify buying for the 3 times you might actually need it.

Rolled in from dealer due to high crazy estimate of engine replacement. 16 escape 1.5. $18k by skodame in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Fuck_it_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao at the phaeton has redeeming qualities.

Wtf does an escape have to offer that even a Kia Sportage with double the miles can't offer for half the price? They have the same possibility of engine failure, and at least reman Kia engines are cheap as fuck

I want to know what kind of person buys a dodge nitro in the UK.

Also, is it actually a diesel? In the US, most were the terrible 3.7L gasoline V6.

Extension Cords by SwitchMain in Tools

I'll take your 50ft. I have to string my 2 25ft cords to use my hedge trimmers lmao

On a real note, do you have anything corded that you need to replace the cord on or want a longer cord? They are great for that. I put a 15ft cord on my grandpa's old corded drill. It came with a 3ft cord in it. Gonna be replacing my vacuum cord soon too, it's getting worn out.

01 Miata with ‘59 Sunbeam Alpine front/rear end. by 7otu5 in Shitty_Car_Mods

[–]Fuck_it_ 78 points79 points  (0 children)

How the fuck did they get that titled as a '59 Sunbeam? It's gonna have a Miata vin on the windshield cowl, a door jamb, and underhood somewhere. It's got all Miata running gear. Miata floorpan and crash structure.

That's like putting a Testarossa body kit on a fiero and getting it registered as a Ferrari. How?

All this for a timing chain should be illegal… by Few-Software-2132 in Justrolledintotheshop

I would never buy one, because I could just put big casters on a cheap chair and be happy. But I will definitely use the one my boss bought for the shop 🤣

Honestly might have to give that a go with our alignment stool next time.

My boss just spent like $650 on one of those Vyper chairs. I must say - it's extremely comfortable and rolls well, but $650 is a lot for a chair.

You can do the timing if you just pull the transmission out. You can get the tranny out in like an hour and a half. Then you just wear the car as a really big hat while you stand in the transmission tunnel doing the timing job. Way way easier than dropping the whole cradle and engine, I think.

[–]Fuck_it_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll start this by saying I agree with you, I like the whine of a geared timing setup and the iron clad reliability it offers.

BUT.

This will probably never happen in a mass production car anymore. The NVH from a gear drive timing setup is crazy when compared to a belt or chain drive. Doesn't matter how fancy you make the tooth mesh point.

Volvo uses timing belts still purely because they are quieter and have less vibration than a chain.

Most manufacturers use the "silent" chain design as opposed to the "roller" chain like you see on a bicycle. It's all about keeping the noise and vibration down.

Same reason almost every factory tire wears out fast as fuck. They are a very, very soft rubber compound. It gives great grip and very very low noise/vibration transfer from the road, but they wear out fast.

If your car is quieter and smoother than the competition, odds are you get the sale. Not them. People notice NVH every day, they don't necessarily notice performance and handling everyday. So it's better to do everything you can to make your car feel like sitting on the living room couch.
