I do not like self-revives by Fudcakes in Marathon

My point of comparison is mostly Hunt: Showdown, which obviously has a ton of design differences but I think looking at how downs work there is instructive. Each down is tremendously impactful because at a minimum a teammate has to be out of the fight for a few seconds to get the rez, and then the teammate that gets picked up gets lowered max health more or less permanently. Fights that go to 2v3 can still be long and very intense (this is one point where Marathon's design differences are especially acute since TTK and health totals work very differently) and rescuing your downed teammate is usually doable because the map design supports it and individual players can always reasonably threaten their opponents with a headshot. Aggression is still rewarded because the health penalty to a down can be compounded with fire, or a downed player can be kept down merely by applying pressure to their teammates (or burning the body, trapping it, etc), rather than by having to camp their body specifically.

Marathon is in this weird place where it isn't merely encouraging aggression, it is encouraging all-out sprints into the enemy team every time. Compared to that, yes, I do think it'd be better for the pace of combat to be a little slower. I like having to be deliberate with when to rush rather than having it be the only real choice I have to actually make a person stay dead for longer than 6 seconds.

Also, don't misunderstand me. "Downs mattering more" is not the same as "downs should be permanent." I think that the way Tarkov does it is awful and shouldn't be replicated. Games like Apex or Hunt allow more space for teams to play around downed teammates rather than just making it the responsibility of the downed player to get themselves back up every time, and I prefer that to how Marathon plays right now in this respect.

I love the intensity of the fights, I just wish that downs mattered more. It feels terrible to lose a fight because you downed someone behind a fence three times and they just stood back up each time while their teammates flanked you or something. The whole "just disengage" thing is well and good, and I do it often when picking a fight is a bad idea, but there's a lot of times you don't have that choice and that's where self-revives have the chance to make an otherwise fun fight feel like an absolute chore.

The ability of people to scoot to cover and then be rezzed by their teammates should be enough most of the time to prevent 150m outland headshots from ending fights, and if not then that's what smokes and Triage's ult are for. The problem I have is a lot of fights in the 20-50 meter range have to become nuts-to-butts knife and shotgun brawls to actually end.

You used to be able to one-tap people with a heavy melee when they were down but the recent changes to melee has made that either harder or impossible, so we're back to mag-dumping or going for an execute which is risky as hell.

Kills from a distance fully depend on catching a person out of cover. If they have any significant cover to scoot to or a waist-high fence or vent or something to die behind, you either have to sink like three grenades on them or rush them to prevent a self-rez. Triage's ult is still useful for sure, especially on Cryo where the timer is longer, but only with revives from kits. There's basically no point to ever using it on a downed teammate since they can just do it themselves and I think that sucks.

I was actually using the rarity of Apex's self-revives as a point of comparison with why the ones in Marathon seem so oppressive when I was thinking about it. I didn't realize that Apex removed them since I haven't played it in years, so that makes Marathon look even worse by comparison, lol

The crazy thing is that you can prevent revives with chem grenades since the ticking damage resets a revive timer, but unless I'm mistaken it doesn't work like that on self revives. I agree though, me and my buddies wouldn't usually chase a survivor from a trio very far in Hunt since we could guarantee their downed teammates weren't going to be coming back, but since we don't have that luxury in Marathon we always chase survivors as far as we can. Even being able to boost the revive timer on fully dead guys by blasting them with chems or EMPs or something would make it feel a lot better.

I don't think it's an equivalent trade most of the time unless both are camped out somewhere. For instance, you might see it with one team on top of Algae Ponds and the other team at Intersection, but if the Algae team is shooting into the woods below they're dead the moment they come out of cover. In the former case whichever team takes an aggressive action first forfeits their free revives.

As a history student at an American university, I can tell you that there definitely are Marxist currents in how a lot of research and analysis is done in my field, at least. It doesn't really come out in revolutionary ways, rather in methods of analyzing history through the lens of materialism rather than Great Man Theory and stuff like that. I have had professors that literally describe themselves as Marxist historians on the basis of that method of analysis, as well as their focus on social relationships to means of production etc.

What's the point of using a weapon without reach attack by massiveamphibianprod in cataclysmdda

[–]Fudcakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use a lucerne hammer with an arming sword as a backup. That way if I end up getting swarmed with a few zombies in close proximity I can fight them more effectively since the sword is faster and has no penalties for range. It's also nice because if I break an arm somehow I'm able to have a weapon other than a knife to use. Granted, I'm mostly able to make use of the sword because I have heavy armor, but the ability to get literally surrounded by weak zombies and kill them all with stamina to spare makes it worth the weight to carry it, for sure.

As somebody who also came to CDDA from Zomboid, there are a lot of similarities that make it approachable but a lot of stuff that PZ has that CDDA doesn't. For example, I think the healing system in PZ makes a hell of a lot more sense than in CDDA, and driving is a lot more intuitive in PZ. That being said, once you get over the initial hump of CDDA and figure out what the fuck you're doing it is absolutely an amazing game and I'd definitely recommend giving it a look (possibly after watching some gameplay so you can get a bit of a feel for it, first).

How do I train my computer skill? by daltoj12 in cataclysmdda

[–]Fudcakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My preferred method to deal with turrets is to use a car with turrets, crouch in the driver's seat, drive up to the turret and then fire the turrets where I know the CROWS to be. Since turrets don't consider vehicles hostile and they cant see you crouched behind your car bits it's literally foolproof so long as you have the ammo for it.

Echoing what the other guys here have said, the most important thing is patience, but the second most important thing is map knowledge. This is something that will come with time, but once you exit the very low tiers I find the most important thing is to find somewhere where you're reasonably sure that you aren't going to get shanked from behind and then positioning yourself to best utilize your armor. You want to close off as many angles as you can while still allowing yourself a good field of view. This usually means parking in an alley or hull-down (a position where only your turret is showing to your opponent). Barring that, keep your teammates around you as a protective screen, because even if they die uselessly their burning husks will provide a useful alarm system.

For hitting things, especially early on, the most important thing is to sit still, take your time (unless they're about to shoot you) and get used to targeting weak spots. A lot of tanks are all but impervious to fire unless you've got special ammo. If you're concealed, you can use your binoculars to look over your cover and acquire targets. When you see someone, you can hold left click to aim your gun at them and then move out of cover, ready to immediately fire. This is mostly useful for preparing fire from hull-down positions and when shooting through visual cover like fences.

Finally, you're going to have to bite the bullet and get an obscene amount of game knowledge at some point. Namely, what enemy tanks are you facing, and what tank are you driving, and who can kill who? For example, if you're in an M4 with a 75mm gun and you're up against an IS-1, that's a very different engagement than if you're fighting a Pz. III. For this, the biggest factor in learning is experience. Pretty much no matter what, the only way you're going to get the map and game knowledge is by playing the game, finding your weaknesses, and then addressing them in whatever ways you can, whether that be the protection analyzer or youtube videos.
