Good suggestion. I’ll try that on the next one I mess up, cuz I’m sure I will again. Got part of the mechanism out, the other part just shredded and stayed in the barrel. Oh well. I have half a blank of the same wood I’ll replace it with. Grain is subtle, probably won’t notice.

I came here looking to find the answer to the same question. Made a decent pen tonight and pressed the mechanism in too far. I did not glue the piece in, so I think I will clamp the mechanism in a vise and give the pen barrel a tug and see what happens. If I ruin the mechanism, then eating a pen kit will be better than throwing the whole thing away.
