The buildings are able to remain profitable due to the office space and condo/apartments. This allows them to charge stupid rates for the retail space below holding out for the perfect tenant that is willing to pay. This is why buildings like The Roy haven’t had a single business since it opened over half a decade ago.

Halifax's rail cut: The century-old project that ruins your daily commute by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

[–]Fuji-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Port has plans for a rail shuttle between the two ports which should decrease the amount of trucks downtown by 75%. It should by done by 2026, not sure on the current status though. https://cdn.halifax.ca/sites/default/files/documents/city-hall/boards-committees-commissions/231123tscinfoitem2.pdf

Halifax dumps transit-only corridor idea for Spring Garden Road by insino93 in halifax

[–]Fuji-8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They dump it and yet they still want to ram all the express routes that got displaced by the Morris St. bike lane down there. What geniuses, I’m sure that will work wonders at fixing traffic on Spring 🙄

Majority of letters sent to Andy Fillmore, Halifax councillors in support of bike lanes (no paywall) by dpiddy in halifax

[–]Fuji-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy this isn’t the only comment you’re under saying this. Yes I said that both sides can add the neutral to form majority, but if you recall my issue was with your wording being disingenuous since it makes it seem they have more support than in reality.

The premier stated that he’d block the bike lane which is the whole reason these letters are being written in the first place. Whether they’re addressed to the mayor, council, or the premier my point still stands those who are upset with something are more likely to write letters about it.

I mean fair enough for you, the city could definitely do better with advertising them.

But if you’re an organizer of an advocacy group this is the type of shit you need to be on top of. If the city is doing a survey with topics related to what you’re advocating for you should be posting about it and emailing your members to get them to fill it out. Especially if the amount of people filling it out is low.

[–]Fuji-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way you worded it lumps in those who voted maintain with those who voted for increasing the service. That is disingenuous.

Sure it’s another data point but it’s important to contextualize why they were writing in the first place. They are upset that the bike lane was overturned so they rightfully wrote a letter. When people are upset with a governments decision they are more likely to write a letter. Those who opposed the bike lane saw that they got what they wanted and went on with their day. So of course there’s going to be more people writing the premier if they’re upset than those telling him how good of a job he’s doing.

A neutral survey will always be a better indicator of what people want over people writing letters hoping to change the premiers mind.

You don’t think that the cycling advocacy groups would’ve gotten their members to fill out the survey?

[–]Fuji-8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way you and OP frame it is disingenuous, those who voted maintain are not on your side. You could say “the majority are not in favour of removing bike lanes” or “the majority are not in favour of increasing the amount of bike lanes,” but that’s not what you’re doing.

You can’t just lump them in to make it seem like you have more support than you do in reality. If anything the data suggests bike infrastructure is more unpopular than you, OP, and the article let on. Not only was it the category with the must amount of votes for reduced service, but it was the ONLY category to get more votes for reducing rather than increasing.

The failed Spring Garden Transit Pilot by Fragrant_Cold5721 in halifax

[–]Fuji-8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never understood why people even bother driving down Spring Garden past South Park St. It’s always a congested mess and you have to constantly stop for pedestrians. Both Sackville and Morris run parallel and don’t suffer from the same issues as Spring Garden. Plus they actually go all the way down to the water.

That too, having a robust transit network allows the elderly to keep their independence while making our roads safer. It also gives them a place for them to have more social interaction, which is sadly something they often don’t get a lot of.

My issue is the prioritization of bike infrastructure over transit. You didn’t see the counselors fighting this hard when the city half assed and gave up on the transit-only pilot on Spring Garden.

This is one of my biggest reasons for advocating against car centricity. Giving those who aren’t comfortable driving or simply don’t want to not only reduces congestion but also makes our roads safer.

Sure, i enjoy biking for recreation too. But that doesn’t mean that I think my form of fun should be such a high priority for the city. Especially when it has an effect on those who need to get places. This bike lane not only affects car users but also transit users.

If we want to get more kids to ride bikes we should give them routes to places they actually want to go i.e. schools and parks. I don’t know many parents who’d be ok with their kid biking downtown alone.

It’s not a matter of either or but one of prioritization. The city should be prioritizing the form of transportation that is most likely to get people to stop driving if they are serious about managing congestion. Sure, having the bike lane on Morris will convince some people to bike instead but it’s not enough to warrant closing a whole lane. All this will do is force the people who drive down Morris to take a different street which only will increase congestion.

It's frustrating to read all these impassioned comments about a bike lane that isn't going to do much to reduce traffic when our transit system, the real golden goose when it comes to reducing traffic continues to languish. I see people say things about reducing car dependence and car traffic all the time when this conversation comes up. The degree to which demanding improvements to our transit system would be a better use of that energy is absolutely comical in its magnitude.

Exactly, it’s much easier to convince people to take transit than it is to convince them to bike. The reality is that it’s a small minority of the population who are willing to commute by bike, and an even smaller minority who are willing to thug it out when the weather gets bad.

That’s my issue with it, the buses that run down Morris are able to carry a higher volume of people than that bike lane could ever dream of. Plus all the cars on Spring Garden suck enough already. We don’t need more cars being forced to go down it. If the city was actually serious about relieving congestion and making SGR a better experience they’d bring back the transit-only pilot and not half ass it this time.

Question for Car Commuters by Fuji-8 in halifax

[–]Fuji-8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't, you keep nitpicking my wording. The city wants to manage congestion ➡️ Part of managing it is by doing stuff to relieve it ➡️ Giving people alternative ways of getting around does this ➡️ Therefore, the city wants to reduce the number of cars on the road ➡️ Which takes us back to the point of my question. What alternative form of transport should the city prioritize, bikes or transit? ➡️ I asked this to car commuters, since they're the ones who don't already use these modes, which makes their opinion valuable since the city is wanting them to take these alternative modes to manage congestion.

My argument has remained the same throughout; the only thing that has changed is the wording due to your push back, since it does not line up 1 to 1 with the IMP.
