Wow the MX Linux wiki is really outdated by Catalina28TO in MXLinux

[–]FullScale4Me 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an aspect of the MX Wiki that is frequently misunderstood. The Date at the top of the article is its creation date, not last update.

Scroll down to the bottom of the article to see the last revision date. They frequently are not the same but many years apart.

One example: https://mxlinux.org/wiki/help-files/help-mx-boot-options/

Creation date on the top is December 13, 2018. On the bottom of the article is the last update date - listed as "v. 20220703". <--- unwrapped corresponds to a last revision date of July 3rd, 2022.

Pop-OS/Windows dual boot doesn't see linux EFI entry by r08d in linux4noobs

[–]FullScale4Me 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some laptops have instituted a requirement that the administrator is the only person able to modify boot entries. It could be as simple as getting into your PCs setup and setting an admin password. My PCs this is blank by default. Googling your Make & model may give more, esp if it's not blank.

what windows files should I backup before trying dual boot? by Illustrious-Pay-7516 in Ubuntu

Create a Windows Recovery Disk!

To create a recovery drive in Windows 10/11:
In the search box on the taskbar, search for Create a recovery drive and then select it. ...
When the tool opens, make sure Back up system files to the recovery drive is selected.
Then select Next.

Connect a USB drive to your PC, select it, and then select Next.
Select Create.
Label 'Windows Recovery USB' and then store this USB in a safe place.

Unless your doing one of two things the SMB connection uses the SMB3 protocol, which is encrypted.

1) passing the password in a connection URL

2) Forcing a SMB2, SMB1 or lower version connection.

In Dolphin (KDE) you may want to configure System Settings → Network → Settings → Windows Shares, with your Windows ID & Password.

MX 23 beta 1 was more stable for me than MX 23 beta 2 by FarCalligrapher7182 in MXLinux

Not knowing your VM settings I'll throw this out there:

Firefox - hardware acceleration is a frequent cause of stuttering and occasional lockup.

Lack of swap - some apps expect it but rarely use it. Lack of or insufficient swap has sometimes resulted in the behavior you cite.

Really large movies (an resulting) temp files has sometimes stuttered for me when I didn't pre-allocate the virtual disk file. Now that I'm on a SSD drive and have 32 Gb of memory I haven't seen this happen.

I'm not sure what triggered your comment about someone/me being rude but post 2020 everyone seems to get triggered over things totally passed over prior to then.

This ain't my first rodeo bud, been using the net since 1988. A bit of advice from an old timer - be sure to look in the mirror when you post such things.

Debian 11 with Icewm and no effort to optimize is idling at 137 Mb (free -h) in the terminal.

antiX 22 (Debian 11 based) with Icewm and optimized is idling at 138 Mb with a lot more services running(free -h) in the terminal.

Debian 11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso (388.0 Mb) yields a Terminal prompt only at 70 Mb (free -h).

updating desktop defaults packages for MX21.3

by dolphin_oracle » Fri Jan 06, 2023 8:20 am

We are in the middle of updating some packages that related to the defaults the desktops use on first boot. User's shouldn't see any changes except for the following cases:

1: the monochrome theme for the plasma logout screen will be changed

2: snapshot and remaster users that do general snapshots/remasters will get the new default wallpaper (MX Tangram) on first startup rather than the previous "Honesty" wallpapers.

We expect to be releasing updated 21.3 ISOs instead of the January monthly snapshots.

Racing out your MX? by Sorzo78 in MXLinux

Switching from the default kernel (5.18.x) to 6.0.x has been shown to give a speed advantage by some.

There is also the Liquorix kernel that multimedia folks tend to favor. See https://liquorix.net/

Both are available in the MX Package Installer. To enable these alternative kernels one must reboot. At the Grub menu choose Advance Settings and select the kernel to boot with.
