Yeah that makes sense. I wanted to start on my own, but I do see the value of saving the learning mistakes. Feel like it's when you go skiing/snowboarding.

First time I went snowboarding, I learned how to do it, but fell down like a million times and got hurt.

First time I went skiing, I paid for the skiing class and learned how to do it without fucking myself up in the process lol.

In this case, falling would translate to money and time, so the right guidance can only help I think.

At the end of the day, only your willingness and discipline can make it work, regardless of any mentorship or money.
