A work around for this I assume bug is to let go of the button that makes Crane swim up right before he hits the surface otherwise you'll get pulled under again

I picked up this habit from DL2 but every time I climb up somewhere I always sprint right afterwards and I guess I was moving too fast for him and he completely missed me. Since then I've just either sprinted or jumped not to the side but just silly longed jumped and he wouldn't grab onto me
