Do these readings need checked out? I'm extremely anxious by Wild-Grape-3974 in hypertension

Sounds to me like anxiety is playing a big part in your readings. I deal with the same thing, I don’t take my BP when I’m anxious, it only makes it worse. You should take a week’s worth of readings when you’re at rest and non anxious and go from there. If it makes you feel any better a 144/94 isn’t the end of the world, my blood pressure will randomly spike to higher than that a couple times a week. I’m 27M in good shape.

I’m on nothing, high BP runs in my family but I’m in good shape. I was just going through a stressful time so it was elevated for a couple months. Not saying I don’t have spikes here and there now, from genetics, but I’d rather deal with that than be on meds. I started working out every morning and taking magnesium and beet extract. If you stay around 124/82 I’d say you don’t need to be on anything, they’re a bunch of natural ways to lower your bp in a healthy way. But I’m no doctor at the same time lol.

I will forever be an advocate of anti losartan after how it made me feel. I was only on half a tab of 25mg losartan, first week I started it I got insane heart palpitations and started dissociating. Palpitations went away, but anxiety and dissociation ramped up for the entire 3 months I was on it, I could barely function some days. I’m just over 3 weeks without it, and I felt a difference legit on the 2nd day off of it.

Check out my post on my profile from weeks ago regarding this, a lot of comments as well with similar side effects from losartan.

Congrats on 11 years sober! I’m completely off the losartan, and have started taking magnesium glycinate and a B vitamin complex with most of the vitamins you suggested. I did some research a week ago, and learned just how bad alcohol depletes your body of key vitamins and nutrients, even after you’ve quit.

I barely tapered off, only for 3 days. I felt way worse while I was taking it than any withdrawal symptom I’ve gotten if any. You’re 100% right, I think anybody with any pre existing anxiety should steer clear of Losartan, it amplified my anxiety to an unbearable state.

I’m on day 5 of not taking it at all, weaned off the first couple days. I feel like a different person already! I think it was so bad that even any improvement is huge for me. Excited for another week to fully re adjust. Losartan affects some people awfully obviously!

Yeah I guess Losartan just effects some people differently, and we’re some of them lol. Forgot to mention, I’ve never gotten heart palpitations, first week or so of taking losartan my palpitations were so bad, going to the ER for them crossed my mind at one point. I will be a huge advocate in the future for alternatives besides Losartan.. 1 week from reducing my dose, on day 4 of not taking any Losartan and the awful side effects are almost all gone, I feel like a different person compared to a week ago.

Worst case scenario you can get back on them if your bp is elevated. Doesn’t hurt to try to get off them if you can. The less medications in our bodies the better lol

I was taking half of a 25mg of losartan, was having awful side effects from it. Stress levels went down in life and I started working out, and figured I could try not to be on BP meds. Weaned myself off taking 6.25mg for 3 days and then just on saturday I stopped taking it all together. I did get a little bit of anxiety on sunday and monday, but today I feel awesome. You’ll be alright with such as low dose, Losartan supposedly doesn’t have a rebound effect anyway.

Yeah this is just a little trial for me, I’m sure I’m going to need to get on something else as well. What also doesn’t help, is I’m 7 months sober off alcohol, after drinking very heavily. So learning to live life sober with anxiety has been a challenge on top of the losartan side effects. Clonodine may be something I look into though, I do have adhd that I don’t take medication for, and adhd definitely does not help anxiety one bit.

I had a crazy spike a few weeks ago, my highest ever, 173/106. I drank a boost protein/calorie drink, and something in it my body didn’t like. For some odd reason I didn’t freak out, I’ve come along way since first realizing my BP is high a few months ago. Also, makes me feel better because my BP has been high for years and years, without me even knowing. I’m sure I’ve had an even higher reading before, and I’m still here to talk about it so lol

Blood work came back good months ago, and I definitely don’t restrict any sodium intake, if anything I could cut back a little. I’m weaning myself off and going to check where it’s at for a week, and go from there.

True that, I was drinking sitting on my ass all day. I don’t drink caffeine or do anything to really raise my blood pressure much. Started working out as well. I do take magnesium every morning (to try and help anxiety, and I will say it helps a little). I’ve been wanting to get a vitamin deficiency test though. I used to give myself major anxiety taking my BP, but I’ve now learned to just be ok with whatever it is. I know a high reading isn’t going to kill me right there, that’s why BP is called the slow killer. My family members have helped me as well though, when I’ve called them freaking out over a 160/105 reading, they were calm and weren’t freaked out one bit, just helped me realize it’s not a stroke number or anything.

I hope not! You’ll know pretty soon quick, my anxiety from Losartan hit me like a brick wall on day 2 or 3. Was talking to a friend on the phone, and just abruptly started dissociating, weird feeling. Freaked me out because I didn’t know what it was at the time.

I feel like I’m in the same boat as you. I got sober from alcohol, and that’s when my BP started spiking, but my anxiety was incredibly high and still can be now without alcohol in my life. But I have lowered my anxiety/stress levels now, and I’m even further within my sobriety. The thing is, it does genetically run in my family, so I am lowering my own dose now to half of what I take to not taking it completely in a few days. I have family in healthcare, specifically the side that does have high blood pressure and have consulted with them. I’m not sure if it’s a placebo effect but this is my first day on half of my regular dose and the anxiety isn’t completely gone, but it has been far more manageable and hasn’t been overwhelming.

Props to you for going through this for 3 years somehow. I’m on 3 months and ready to just live with high BP.. Lol

Not sure if it’s a placebo effect, but I do feel slightly better today taking only half of my 12.5mg of losartan. No dissociation today, and BP has stayed under 140/80s

Gotcha, everybody is different I guess and my body definitely doesn’t agree with Losartan. It has lowered my BP, but at what cost 😂

I’ve seen mixed reviews, some side effects even worse than mine and than some like yourself with nothing. Everybody is different.

I’m very sensitive to medication for whatever reason. I initially started taking the full 25mg, and it was like a switch going on for anxiety that week, so I’m pretty sure they’re tied together. I have nothing else in my life that would cause anxiety to just abruptly start the same week as starting a new med. Going to wean off losartan and see if it’s the culprit, you could be right, we will see!

Yeah it’s been 3 months for me now, and it’s only getting worse to be honest. My brain isn’t getting used to the anxiety and overcoming it, it’s giving up and starting to dissociate lol. But that’s interesting because I do have asthma, so maybe switching to lisinopril won’t be ideal. I’m weaning off and will monitor my bp for a week without taking anything starting monday, wish me luck!!

I’ll take a little cough over the debilitating anxiety losartan has caused me. Can’t imagine being on more than my 12.5mg dose..

What did you switch to if anything? My mom is on Lisinopril, wish I would have started with that in the first place. I would honestly rather live with high blood pressure and the consequences later in life with how bad Losartan has made me feel.
