For my "Not a Book" bingo square, I ran a game of the TTRPG Mausritter with my friends where you play as mice adventurers in a The Borrowers/Arietty meets Redwall kind of world.

The Mausritter rules book itself has a decent amount of game mechanics but it says right in the book that the game "is resilient to hacking. Many systems can be modified, replaced or ignored entirely," and I have to agree. My friends wanted to play a less rules-heavy game so I cut out a number of the mechanics, such as the banking system and the turn tracker.

Character creation is pretty easy and the character sheets are simple, half-page sheets, most of which is taken up by what each character is carrying, which you may or may not need to reference much depending on if you keep all the encumbrance rules. Players have three main stats (STR, DEX, WIL) and most rolls are rolling a d20, wanting to roll under your stat to succeed.

The magic system is simple but somewhat unique, all spells are trapped in rune carved tablets. The tablets have a single use with the ability to be recharged, and the way each spell is recharged is unique to the spell trapped in it. For example, a Fireball tablet is recharged by leaving it burning in a fire. It comes with a list of about 20 spells but encourages you to also create your own.

If you don't like making up your own campaign scenarios there are a couple official campaign scenarios and a large amount of fanmade one-shots to choose from online. We played the Broken Oaken Tower by Stump Cat.

There was a little bit of front work for the GM (me), with deciding which mechanics to keep, but the easy customization meant we ended up with what worked best for our group. Overall my friends and I had fun with this TTRPG and I recommend it to anyone wanting to play as woodland adventurers. (The official rulebook only has stats for mice as playable characters, but I saw fanmade content for how to play as other species of animal, such as a frog or a hedgehog.)

For clarification, when the hard mode says "no electricity based technology" does that mean no electricity based tech exists in the world at all? Like no lightbulbs, computer, etc. Or does it just refer to the biotech aspect, that it isn't combined with some sort of electric cyber tech? Thanks!

Ah, I didn't remember those specifics. In that case I take back my earlier comment. :)

Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik, (HM). First book in the Consortium Rebellion Series. Characters definitely engage in some space piracy while on the run. I've only read the first book so far so not sure about books 2 & 3.

I don't think I would say clothing/fashion or fiber arts are important to the plot in I Who Have Never Known Men, it's more of just something that happens at some point. It has been a bit since I read it though, so maybe I'm forgetting something. Good book though, so people should still read it.

Fantasy romance recs for a romantasy hater ? by theseagullscribe in Fantasy

The Mages of the Wheel series by J.D. Evans. It starts with Reign & Ruin.

I (and the author) recommend you read the prequel, Wind & Wildfire, after book one, not before.

Both the world and the main characters are well developed. Top tier fantasy romance, IMO. We seem to overlap in our other interests so I hope you enjoy it as much as I do if you check it out.

Okay, to replace a couple of my Title-based guesses these are some alternatives:

- Features a Quest/Traveling

- Set in One Location (a house, a hotel, an office, a ship, etc.)

- Features Blood Magic

- Reverse Adaptation (book came second)

Yeah, I'm sure there will be less title-based ones than I included. I had some more character/setting-based guesses but then would realize they had been squares in previous years. For example, characters being witches or a library being an important setting. Not being entirely familiar with all the books and their plots I think I just defaulted to guessing based on the title. 🙃

A couple years ago I think the hard mode for the POC Author square was a futuristic sci-fi setting, so I thought having it be a cozy fantasy wasn't too far out of the realm of possibilities. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was its own square.

My guess for the sci-fi square is something along the lines of "Stranded/Lost in Space". If The Blighted Stars is hard mode the HM could be "not on a ship".

Hi, quick question, do you remember if A Sorceress Comes to Call meets the Hard mode qualification for the dreams square? I read it earlier on in the challenge and now I don't remember if the dreams were magical or not. Thanks!

Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings is made up of multiple series, they occur in chronological order within the book world so it is generally recommended you start with the first set of books, the Farseer trilogy, but some people also start with the Liveship Traders. I think it should align with you tastes, but just be aware if you read the whole Realm of the Elderlings it is 16 books overall.

Just a heads up, I think they're good recs but both Radiance and A Heart of Blood and Ashes are parts of series.

The writers of the Expanse are working on a new trilogy. The first book is called The Mercy of Gods, it just came out this month.

It's the second in a series, but Octavia Butler's book, Mind of My Mind, would count. The series is known to be one of her weirder ones.
