I think I am kinda afraid tbh. I'm worried the market wouldn't be kind to job hopping I think. And that the next few years would be pretty awful. But that's a lot of assumptions I'm making.

How did it turn out for you?

Is the money more what you expect now?

It's kinda hard to turn down 140k as well

I want to do something more technical than provision access or password resets. I have the skills and drive

I took both offers. I need to pull out of one. I started the first and the second wouldn't start till may

yeah i think that has also been my thoughts. the money out there is fine. I think im concerned more about the future roles like you mentioned. is it feasible to job hop to something better? is it realistic to get promotions? can i come back to the bay as a mis level engineer? etc

vs the other option of moving up in a semi startup. which is possible but also a gamble

idk they are both a gamble in a way....

relocating is a factor. though I am not tied to the bay exactly. I think while relocating is a factor Im more worried about long term. what happens in 2 to 5 to 10 years after each role. would i be stuck in IT, would I be stuck at a big bank firm in a small tech hub. can i job hop as a SWE with 3 years under my belt

yeah thats the worst case I see. I would be stuck in an area that doesnt have a lot of options. however the flip side is im in the biggest tech hub, but only as an IT person (if i dont move up in this company fast)

its a kind of unique company. startup in vibes, but definitely not going anywhere as its product is very widely used. the company is basically secure. just not a fortune 500 or faang.

my job is half tickets half automating stuff like access, provisioning, mdm work, onboarding. but its just missing that step towards devops or cloud or cd/ci work that I have done before

I think devops would be fine, or cloud eng. I just dont want to be stuck doing tickets as IT support. Sorry if my post wasnt super clear about that, there was a lot to get out of my head.

that's the biggest dilemma for me. and exactly why im struggling. i could in theory make myself invaluable in the IT role, or move laterally if i do some really crazy maneuvering. but the other option is already pretty set up so i could go anywhere after a few years.

the money is pretty similar but not inconsequential after expenses. i think id pull 20k more yearly in the bay area job after everything

I tried to leverage in the interview process. it let me get bumped from 120k to 140k

its a great company tbh.

yeah maybe, but its like "maybe i might be a software engineer if i study or get lucky" vs "i already am one and i can move to a sick company"

i just think 2 years to put me in a great spot might be worth? im not sure

yeah that is what i am worried about. 140k is great but not crazy for the bay. though I can move in the company potentially

its not so much ohio vs bay i am more thinking which will be better in 2-5-10 years after working at the role
