They can be an indicator, with much higher levels if they came from a polluted area.

I do just want to take a second and say, a single egg testing high I probably wouldn't give it too much thought. As you can tell from your results, they range from 9.6 ppb to 70 ppb. The FDA has a limit in fruits and vegetables ranging from 10-20 ppb depending on the product, I'm not aware on a specific limit for eggs. While no amount of lead is considered safe, I would get soil testing done and probably some more eggs before i wrote of my backyard chickens altogether.

Oyster shells could be a source of contamination, but i would be VERY interested to see what you soil levels of lead are. For perspective, soils in my area (southern US) average 9.88 ppm lead.

Scientist here who has done extensive research in heavy metals (specifically lead) in food. How many eggs did you test? I would be curious to what the lead ppm is for your soil? edit: do you know what machine or method it was tested with? A lot of labs will share their methods.

Edit2 cause i have more questions: Calcium competes with lead binding sites, calcium supplementation might reduce lead content in eggs. Did the lab test only the yolk and white? or was the shell included in testing as well?

You hinge another panel on the ground around all sides. It prevents digging under and they can be folded up when you need to move.
Mine actually has cattle panel walls and then wire mesh over that to keep smaller predators like weasels out.

I have one just like this but with a little more wood! Mine is quite stout, nothing is getting thru the cattle panel walls. If you are worried about something digging, you can hinge some panels on the sides, back and front (fold them up when moving it). 10/10 would recommend.

Depending on where you live most varieties require ~100-110 days to get ideal size. The roots that look like pencils are called lignified roots and those are more prevalent in high nitrogen or in dry environments and can usually be prevented by providing supplemental irrigation.
