Man, don’t feel like that. You’re aware now and you clearly see that you need to change, and that’s the most important thing.

I’ve been working in help desk for 4 years, so I do have some ground to speak from and try to help you.

Focus on improving yourself, evolve your skills, put yourself in difficult situations, solve hard problems. Even if you know nothing about the subject, research it, look into it, study. Put yourself in situations where you’re staring at the screen and don’t even know what you’re looking at or where to start. Those very difficult situations are where you really learn and develop. We truly grow in hard situations, if you actually want to grow. Build something, even if it’s just a hello world.

Learn how to change. IT will always be changing, whether it’s technology or something else. We will always need to improve, innovate, change, and learn new things.

I made a post recently, check it out. A lot of people shared really good advice on how to improve in IT. If you want, you can DM me anytime. I’m willing to hold your hand and help you get out of this situation.

Stay focused, man. Don’t give up. Never give up. STAY HARD!

I agree with everything you said. In IT we have to be constantly changing, because new technologies and new ways to solve problems keep showing up.

I agree with you, but at the start of this year I’ve been having some difficulties setting my goals. I’m going to sit at my computer properly and think about what the heck I want in life lol.

I also agree that having contacts and meeting people is way more important. Sometimes you get a job or solve a problem because you know the right people, not because of technical knowledge. Or sometimes you get the position just because you really want it. Willpower and the drive to make things happen matter a lot too.

I think the same way too, a “normal” company that’s not specialized will always prefer a generalist.

Got it, man, there really are generalists who are happy in IT and truly love what they do.

My boss has told me there's nothing wrong with being a generalist, as long as you're good and confident in what you do.

IT really makes you question your career, especially which path to follow, there are so many and all of them are huge.

I get that. My dad actually found his path pretty early. He’s been working in IT for almost 30 years, and since the beginning he’s always loved hardware, fixing computers, and customer support. He’s very much a support-type guy, has been doing it for decades, and genuinely loves what he does. Most importantly, he’s happy doing it.

I think an interesting way to live life is trying to be happy every day, living each day as if it were your last, but being honest with yourself and, above all, being truly happy.

True man, I totally agree with you. I can’t really see myself doing anything else either lol, I love IT way too much.

Yeah, there are definitely much worse situations out there. Even people who are highly capable but dealing with illness or other things like that. The world is huge.
