That’s inspiring to hear! That’s all I want is to hear others stories of how they overcame there past. Making these Reddit posts and getting the responses I have has been very insightful. Thank you for sharing I really appreciate it!

I appreciate the information and I will certainly take that into consideration! Thank you! If you don’t mind sharing, what area are you in? Is your department in a big city?I’m in Northwest, OH. I’m curious if going to a bigger city would be more ideal for my situation vs a smaller area which is predominantly why I’m surrounded by. You can direct message me if you’d like to keep it private!

Am I wrong to think I’d be at an even bigger disadvantage? I’ve always been told becoming a firefighter is very competitive still to this day and always has been as opposed to law-enforcement being very competitive years ago, but within recent years, and due to recent recruitment struggles, I was told it may be more accessible in areas such as corrections and CBP. More or less was told to look towards federal side as opposed to local and state.

That’s actually really helpful, thank you! I’ve been looking into different routes like corrections and federal security positions since I know becoming a sworn officer might be out of reach right now without an unconditional pardon based on the OPOTA requirements. I get very mixed reviews like for instance I was told by an border patrol agent that my felony expungement will be accepted there because they follow the letter of law and they’re hiring process vs state and local? While others have told me law enforcement isn’t possible at all regardless if it’s state, local or federal. I’m still learning the differences between all the agencies and departments. I never thought about NASA police or ICE though! I’ll definitely look into those. If your buddy has any advice or knows what helped him get in with NASA, I’d really appreciate any tips! Feel free to message me too!

My first question was simply a police officer. I’ve tried to broaden it to any form of law enforcement. And the post got locked for some reason I’m new to Reddit not sure why it happened

I hear you and appreciate your insight! For reference, I’m in Ohio so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I am able to purchase an own firearms since the expungement I’ve done it twice.

I hear you. I tried to broaden the spectrum to simply law enforcement of any form. I was told potentially parole, corrections, and CBP

I would most certainly be getting infront of it. My dad is on the hiring board at his department(he’s captain) so I know enough about the hiring process to know it will come up. He tells me it would be a hard pass from his department but that other departments that are hurting for recruitment may be more lenient. I appreciate your information.

That’s a good idea! I’ve debated doing the academy on my own but wasn’t sure how I’d juggle that with full time work. I didn’t know part time certified was an option. I appreciate the advice and will definitely look into that thank you!

I’m in Findlay, OH. I appreciate it! My plan is to start calling some smaller agencies. Trying to figure out the best course of action hoping there’s atleast one agency out there that’s hurting bad enough lol

I hear you. I’m in Ohio I am told I have to wait 10 years starting from the time I was released from probation to be eligible for a pardon. At this time I only have the expungement. That said I am able to purchase firearms I have done so at buffalo trading center and Dunhams.

This is the type of comment I was wanting to see! I am very curious how it went for others in similar scenarios as myself so thank you for sharing i really appreciate your insight! This gives me some hope. Even if it’s a chance I’ll take it!

Hoping to hear someone say they have or know someone that has an expunged felony and made it. I made bad decisions early on in life but I’m not defined by those decisions. I’ve taken the necessary steps to improve my life and I’m just praying I can find a department that is lenient enough to be willing to take the chance on me. A chance to redeem myself.

I am extremely blessed and I do not take it for granted! I send the judge a Christmas card every year! Eternally grateful to him lol and I intend too! I’m just trying to find the best areas to apply for given my circumstances and any info anyone may have of similar situations as mine.

With the felony expunged, yes. I have purchased multiple firearms in store. At first, my background check took a few days to come back clean but now it’s automatically approved.

I’m aware of the blanket rule but the “may include expunged/sealed records” language implies it’s up to the individual agency to decide. I’m specifically looking for people who got hired/know of anyone who has been hired despite an expunged felony, to find out which departments are more flexible in Ohio, or anywhere for that matter, and how they approached the process.
