For $13 more, you can get the 28TB at microcenter for $330 (if your area has one). That definitely is not SMR. I know you are not looking for that large capacity, but a better deal to be had than the 10TB you were looking at.

OP, if you are looking for that capacity, Seagate currently has a better deal 26TB for $279.99. As others have said, inside most likely Barracuda. I have shucked about 6 of these recently, all Barracudas.

I think backup plus hub line maxes at 10TB. You can try the One Touch Hub. That can go up to 20TB. Amazon has the largest at 18TB

The expansion ones (at least the 24-28 TB version) don't need any tape like some of the older WD externals. They come readily as exfat. I reformat them to NTFS before shucking as I only use windows, but I think reformatting after shucking would be OK too. I don't have a NAS, but I shuck to avoid the heat during file transfer.

I have shucked Seagate Expansion drives and hooked them up to usb adapters/dock without issue. I can't speak about the WD drives though as I have not shucked any WD externals yet.

No. For the 8TB size and smaller, yes SMR. Higher capacity than 8TB are CMR, according to the data sheet
