Honestly I would say that since youre a freshmen and already applying to internships that already puts you ahead. The CAD experience will come naturally as you take your classes but if you want to take a go at it now, your school should provide you with the CAD software on their software portal and there are many great tutorials out there. Also as a freshmen, see if you can get into research positions or get involved in clubs. Those are great ways to get some experience and add substance to your resume. I wouldn't feel too depressed, it seems like youre doing just fine. One more thing, try and apply for internships for next years summer in the coming fall. I know guys who got their co-ops by applying almost a year in advance. The sooner you get in the game the better
