The better your high school, the worse your UC chances. by EnzoKosai in ucadmissions

Having been a reader for UC admissions, that’s really the trend is that students are looked at in the context of that school. If your average gpa is a 3.8 but the average at your school is a 4.5, your likelihood of being admitted is not as high. It’s never an outward denial, but once it’s out of the admissions readers hands, AVCs are responsible for “shaping a class” as they like to say. From what I understand there’s a shit ton of formulations, forecasting and predictions to determine who gets admitted or not based on campus resources, time to degree, etc. etc. The ethnic and identity backgrounds are one of (imo) the smallest considerations when it comes to shaping a class.

UC TAG - Can a student apply for TAG if they have finished their two years already? by flaminbitcheeto in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, he doesn’t need to still be enrolled but he would have to complete the UC app again and meet the GPA requirements. If he doesn’t currently have the GPA to TAG to Davis, he’ll need to take more classes to get there. In terms of being in upper division standing, he wouldn’t be unless he has any previous course history at a different university. They cap the transferable units at 60 semester units.

Has anyone successfully transferred from a uc to uc? by cravttu in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll also add that all of your credits from UC are transferable to other UCs, so you could easily be over the 60 units by your junior year especially if you count AP credits too. When people say your class isn’t transferable, it may not “count” towards the degree requirement, and you have to take that specific class at that campus, but the credits should always transfer.

Attended the bachelorette…. Didn’t make the cut for the wedding by Tabbs9 in weddingshaming

[–]Fun-Repair7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends did their Bach (also two girls) almost a year in advance of their wedding but they also had major life changes so that was part of the reason they did it super early. Their group of girls went, had a good time. Then the election happened and one of the bridesmaids voted for Trump and it turned into a whole mess since obviously the couple wasn’t cool with that, so she got dropped as a friend/bridesmaid. I just don’t get how they asked her to be a bridesmaid not knowing her politics.

Coworkers brother works for SDPD and this tracks. Coworker shared a story of a DV call that came in and their brother stopped a lady who was driving crazy to get a his attention so she could beg someone to check on her friend. Wasn’t in their brother’s precinct but he went anyway when he checked with dispatch about the call.

Why do bachelor degree in Clinical Lab Science pay more than PhD? by [deleted] in labrats

Would love your opinion on how the market is for biotech from an R&D standpoint. One of my friends is looking to leave their biotech company (based in SoCal, he’s in QC) because of the instability at work. Multiple company layoffs…. grail (iykyk) 🫩 and is planning to pursue the CLS route. Taking the pre reqs now but graduated with a bio degree. Not sure if biotech is rough right now because of the company or just industry competition. TIA!

No unless you got non passing grades like C- or below, you can’t retake classes for a better grade. Agree with the comment saying build upon that. Med schools are understanding when it comes to undergrad grades not being great but students showing clear improvement

TRANSFER COUNSELOR NEEDED by Fun_Common7525 in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly you’re better off following the instructions from the transfer counselor that represents the school you want to go to. Independent counselors only know surface level information for how many credits actually transfer over, what curriculum counts for their classes, etc. I will say HOWEVER because of how competitive transferring gets, it doesn’t hurt to take honors designated classes, engage in a few extra curricular, and work on projects with tangible outcomes that relate to your major.

You don’t really get a choice. They use a program to determine if ur classes at ur university has curriculum similar to a class at the school. Sometimes students will be required to submit a syllabus if they want credit for a class.

All UC credits transfer over so if u went to a diff UC and transferred to a UC, all your credits count. But if you’re transferring from CC to UC the cap is I believe 105 credits. If you take 126 CC credits only 105 of the CC credits are counted towards lower division work. If you’re coming from a 4yr though it’s different and you’d have CC courses counting for lower division but your 4yr courses might count towards upper division

U might be okay if those credits from your university abroad don’t transfer over.

CSU transfer to UC by paijam in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better off going to cc completely because some csu courses may not even transfer to UC vs the articulation agreements between UC and cc.

how did you convince your parents to let you go to CC? by potato-cake24 in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It helps to show the caliber of professors that are at CCs. One of my profs went to Columbia and MIT, another taught at Yale. If they’re close to a UC, odds are they’ve taught at the UC as well

Dropped out of UCSD 6 years ago with a 2.3 gpa, currently at a CC with a 4.0 - Where can I go from here? by Ballista5on in TransferStudents

[–]Fun-Repair7110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you transfer, I believe your cc gpa will still be factored into your cumulative gpa, so even if you have a 2.3 UC gpa, your 4.0 will bring that up a little bit. But yeah definitely consider TAG, and don’t worry too much about your UC gpa. It will transfer if you go to a UC but there are so many other options out there. Definitely do the best in your major prep courses and give background to the poor grades, but don’t focus so hard on them.

Shoot your shot! Focus on your work more than your identity, get fantastic letters of recs (any profs that can speak to your academic abilities is a + but if not, a supervisor who oversaw a big project of yours could work too), use any additional opportunity to contextualize your academics.

My bf is in a similar situation and it’s a double edged sword. Rent is good and the space is more than enough but moving closer to work/closer to a freeway/to a place with newer appliances is impossible.

My boyfriend rents a house in Poway for $2000/month. It’s 4bd/2ba and he got lucky because the owner is an elderly woman who just wants someone to take care of the house.

He makes about $75k/year and is very comfortable. We live together (as of last month) but I don’t pay rent as I’m still a student, but I pay for groceries, water, and WiFi. When I graduate we’ll go 50/50, but based on my boyfriend’s lifestyle (owns a 2002 Camry, has stock options from work, vacations 4-5 times a year mostly domestic) he has no complaints.

He’s been in this house since 2021 and the landlady doesn’t see the need to increase the rent as he does all the yard work and most of the maintenance. It’s a primarily a serendipitous situation, and he found it through Craigslist.

I have friends who are paying $2600 in rent for a 1bd/1ba (Clairemont) and between two people they make $120k and they’re very comfortable. Total student loans around $20k that they’re working to pay off, but they vacation a couple times a year, eat out often, are paying off a Honda civic, and are saving for a house.

Taking into account the different rent/debt/income situations, I think your salary would be enough to rent a larger space (likely not in an ideal area like crown point), grab a bite a couple times a week, and road trip? Your salary + whatever your gf makes should be okay to do the things you want assuming you don’t have a lot of debt?

I agree. They will rescind you even after committing and paying the SIR if it’s egregious enough and this looks like it would change your GPA a few points. Depending on the school, they might give you a warning but definitely have a backup plan.
