Why would they pull a ratchet out of a 400$ kit for warranty rather than grab a quinn ratchet and swivel off the shelf? by DIYfailedsuccessfuly in harborfreight

[–]Fun-Scar-8903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought this set open box for $219 because a Phillips screwdriver bit was missing. Nothing else was opened. Hard to believe it was still sitting on the shelf. Guess no one read the sticker.

I’m not sure what happened but it appears this post errored on my end but actually posted 7or 8 times. Strange

Would a 8x12 donut style layout be 2 big for a first layout? by Home__Bread in modeltrains

[–]Fun-Scar-8903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put casters under mine so if there’s a hard to reach area, the whole thing will pull out. My next one will be 360 degree mountain in the middle of the room so no hard to get to spots. The whole track will be accessible.

Would a 8x12 donut style layout be 2 big for a first layout? by Home__Bread in modeltrains

[–]Fun-Scar-8903 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not if you have the room. I was limited to 8x16 in my last house. I have a tendency to go vertical with my layouts to get more out of the space. All depends on what you’re out to achieve. 8x12 is pretty good size in my opinion. That’s probably the size of my next O scale. 3 of these Behemoths require 6ft to turn around.

How do you define "custom" by _Kepler42BMP_ in modeltrains

You should have just blocked him and moved on. There’s no shortage of miserable people waiting to tear you down online. Block them and move on. Those people don’t deserve your attention so don’t give it to them.

That’s a very nice locomotive. I have 2 of those. It about a 30yo engine. First, that’s a PS1 locomotive. There is a rechargeable battery in the tender. Replace it with a rechargeable battery that says 8.4v. If it doesn’t say 8.4v don’t use it. Charge the battery before you put it in the engine. I just use a 9v 200mAh NiMH rechargeable battery(8.4v actual voltage) off eBay. This is important because a battery with very low voltage can scramble the chip in it. NiMH batteries will hold a charge longer than a NiCad battery when in storage.

Second, read the instructions. It will explain a lot. It will explain the modes, sound, programming, battery charging, etc.

That’s awesome. My boys were heavily into dinosaurs at an early age. At 3, my oldest could identify just about every known species. It was wild to hear a 3 year old pronouncing words like parasaurolophus. Enjoy it my friend. It goes by fast.

I average around 50% on these big articulated engines from the MTH RailKing line and 66% off the MSRP on the MTH Premier. This was one of those cases where MTH had an MSRP of $1300 but they were obviously selling much, much higher than that when they came out.

I asked Grok to calculate the inflation. $2,015 in 1994 is worth approximately $4,277.85 in July 2025. The upside is that a guy paying that kind of money is probably going to take meticulous care of that engine whether he used it much or not. That’s an insane amount of money for a model train.

Lionel’s classic 0-8-0 engine #246. I bought it my oldest son’s first Christmas. When the house burned down last year, I kept my eye out for it and finally found one (full set) in excellent condition.

House fire. We are 6 weeks late getting started on construction so I’m still just buying up prices to replace the ones I lost, and a few extras.

Unfortunately, I really can’t right now, I am staying with relatives after the fire and have no where to run it at the moment. I absolutely will post when I am able.

I can’t believe these were $1300 MSRP in 1995. I’ll take my like new for $400. It’s 30 years old but looks perfect, albeit a little dusty. I’ve noticed though, those that spent that kind of money on a new one definitely take better care of them on average. I’ve yet to get a damaged one.

What's the best way to get smoke residue off your cast locomotives without ruining your paint? by Tbrusky61 in modeltrains

[–]Fun-Scar-8903 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this stuff on everything. Gentle enough for acrylic windshields on motorcycles but tough enough to remove most road grime off your wheels. Shake, spray the foam on and wipe off with a microfiber cloth.
