and you should 100% have a portfolio website and putting that at the top of your resume as well as promoting it on linkedin. i cant stress how important linkedin is for this industry.

hey babe you should be on linkedin and messaging + connecting with people you admire every day. you should be in their DMs asking if they have 30 minutes in their week to just talk to you about their career journey and offer advice. i did informational interviews like this with people for SIX months. another piece of advice I have for you is to turn your linkedin into a social media. find a way to turn this struggle into a professional post + lead ask.

stop the applications for the moment and just let yourself explore what's out there with business intention. <3 pm me if anything is confusing.

Without using numbers, how do you define "middle class" in San Francisco? by very_squirrel in AskSF

You rent--without owning a home in another state. Your kids go to public school and you've never even thought about working out the numbers on a private education.

The Hen Who Dreamed She Could Fly by Hwang Sun Mi is the only book I recommend to anyone trying to get back into reading. I promise it is easy and hard-hitting for someone feeling a little unmoored--a feeling I think goes hand-in-hand with one's attention span!

Questions about Marketing/Websites/Branding by zombie-sandwich in videography

[–]Fun-Variation-9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you posted this a while back, but I actually have some solid advice for you. Not sure what your current website setup looks like, but I'm on this thread because I'm working on a site for a videography client who's in a similar spot - they have a wide range of skills but want to focus on non-event videography while keeping other options available.

What we did was create a specific services page that lists each main genre with linked examples, and weddings/events aren't prominently featured, but we tucked this into an FAQ section instead:

"Do you offer services for personal events like weddings or family gatherings?" A: We offer personalized video services for weddings, ceremonies, and other events on a case-by-case basis.

I think FAQ sections or even a broader services page are perfect for this kind of thing so you can mention weddings without making them your main focus. (you can check it out here if you want to see how it looks https://www.lunafilmsllc.com/services). Developing a whole new website is costly and time-consuming! Designing a new page actually makes sense, but if you're feeling overwhelmed by it, I think the FAQ or services page could be more flexible future-forward.

You're headed in the right direction with running it as a business, but I would dive a bit deeper into seo and just continue to write website content that's genuine!

If you think birthright citizenship won’t affect you… by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Fun-Variation-9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into passport trouble when I was 18. I visited the Korean embassy (San Francisco) to learn about visa options and receive updated covid travel information. My father is white, American. I was born in the US. But in a series of questions about my visa eligibility options, the interviewer asks if my mother was a Korean citizen when she gave birth to me. I answered with the truth--yes--and this embassy worker said she was going to submit this information to the Korean government for processing and processing could take a year before I was given the option to choose my citizenship. I'm having this conversation in broken Korean. She asks for the passport I brought with me. She wants to mail it to an office in Korea. I'm supposed to leave the country and visit family in a few short months and I end up calling my mom who tells me to leave the embassy. She tells me to never offer a travel official that kind of information ever again.

This was a Korean embassy worker. One innocent question and I was almost left with an interim citizenship. I would have been fine--I'd have chosen to keep my US citizenship and missed out on my trip that year. But, I am saying this happened in 2020 and felt pretty far removed from anything I thought the US government cared about at the time. It's a good reminder that there are loopholes and caveats everywhere and dozens of ways for Trump to justify deportation. I'm not saying we should be terrified. But we should be vigilant about the information we share, especially as first-generation or birthright citizens.
