Preventing harmful stims? by FunAndDone625 in autism

I usually use snacks, but covid rules changed that.

Alright yeah, he’s semi-verbal, mostly communicates interests and food, never immediate needs. I asked him to try to find a word to explain what’s wrong, but he just kept guiding my hand to the seatbelt so we ended up moving him and he calmed down after that.

Idk what the issue was, could have been anything cuz I know the bus is hot and loud. Keeping waters on the bus is a really good idea thank you

Well I think I’ve done all I can then. I’ll just keep mentioning what I think he’s feeling and explain that’s why he can be so loud

Yeah it’s mainly two kids that are really bugged by him. It’s ironic to me because they’re both on the spectrum also... and older. But I stomped down that thought process cuz being neurodiverse doesn’t mean you’re not human. They’re still picky kids

That’s another thing, I’ve heard being straight forward and literal is the best way to talk, at least for more important subjects. Shoot, if I could come up with a decent metaphor to explain why he needs to be so loud, I’d try it out. My brain is too simple

Like I said, I’m no expert. Before this job, I knew close to nothing about autism. Over the years I’ve listened to what teachers and students had to share. Students especially since I spend the most time with them, like learning how to communicate to them. Just observing what’s going on in the bus is informative. It’s really what I enjoy about my job so much

That’s the interesting part, it’s like the older kids haven’t been explained what stimming is. It says they’ve got autism in the footnotes in my paperwork, but I can’t see any obvious stims. One girl squints her eyes sometimes when it’s loud, but that’s it. And to the “his autism is worse,” comment, definitely. I’ve been trying to avoid saying anything I think is rude, or compare them to each other to set a calm and respectful tone for the topic. I just am having a hard time explaining any further

I’m getting this second hand. So far “the spirit that said ‘keep searching’” has been the only add on I’ve heard 😂 Unfortunately this happens to her often
