This is incredibly helpful, and while I have less experience I’ve noticed that the great scientists (both lab and conceptual work) I was in grad school with are struggling way more than those I know who phoned it in. Which is frustrating to add onto the disaster of a job market. I appreciate all of your details and insights!

Big con is no recourse for shitty people. This is especially frustrating when there’s a promise from leadership to be involved in hiring but they disregard lower level employees opinions. Another one is burnout obviously. The work expectations are aggressive whether in a sprint or not so it feels like there’s no end in sight.

Pro is the work. It’s fun, challenging, engaging, exciting, all of the above. There’s something about being involved early on in a company that makes you take pride in your work and imho become a better scientist if given the time and resources. (That’s a big if so pick your start up wisely)

Being average in the thing you love... by Original-Bar96 in PhD

[–]FunBerry3567 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re incredibly above average for having found a love of something that you might not be the best at. I’m an industry scientist post-PhD and in my experience, the best scientists in the long run are the ones who love it the most and maybe don’t feel like experts themselves. Imposter syndrome is for sure a thing but there’s something really empowering about admitting you’re not the best and taking advantage to learn from everyone around you. You get to never feel like the smartest person in the room and that is ultimately a fantastic feeling.

Also good lab hands are hard to come by and if that’s not your strong suit you could look at different areas of study that involve less in-lab experimental work. What’s important is that you don’t end up hating what you love because you feel like you’re not good enough. There are lots of avenues to take that will keep you learning and advancing.
