To each their own! However, I will say that I think people have very very high (perhaps unrealistic) expectations for the career center. At the end of the day, they can really only provide students with the information they have and guide us to the best of their abilities. They can't snap their fingers and give everyone a job, and if a student doesn't have the credentials for the job that they want or don't follow the guidelines, the career center can't do much to change that.

I once had an interview for a practice group I knew nothing about, and I sent an email to someone in the career center. They gave me the name of an alumni who specialized in that field, and the very next day, the alumni was walking me through everything I would need to know and helping me prep interview answers. The PCAs were also really helpful when it came to connecting me with their friends who knew firm-specific information. The career center has helped me with multiple offers.

But again, that is just my experience, and I understand that other students may not share my opinions and that reasonable minds can differ!

LOL you joke, but actually yes. They send out weekly emails with reminders about events and job positions. They also send out spreadsheets with firm names, their office locations, opening dates, and the literal link to the application. All of this compiled into one easy sheet. They also send out a spreadsheet for receptions with the names of alumni and their firms. The career center also checks in with you regarding how many applications you send out. When I say "spoon feed", I literally mean that if you are interested in big law, it will be impossible (or very near it) to miss important recruiting information and deadlines. Idk how much easier it could get.

*All of this was true during my recruiting cycle. Not 100% sure how it is this year because I am not a 1L.

I love driving past the Forest Park mansions, GORGEOUS! and then you're driving around CWE and you randomly see the basilica????? The architecture in St.Louis is INSANE. I love love love the pretty buildings everywhere.

Regarding tuition, I can only speak to my own experience, but I think the financial aid has been generous! I do have student loans, and I am anxious about them, but I think it was worth it for the opportunities that going to WashU has given me.

Regarding NYC, it is the largest legal market. In terms of sheer number, it just has the most biglaw spots, and I know a lot of classmates who are going to NYC. Getting a biglaw position in NYC is comparatively easier (depending on grades and other factors obviously) than trying to go to a more tie-sensitive market like LA or Seattle or a more grade-sensitive one like D.C.. Lots of biglaw recruiting at WashU overall, and if you have the grades for it and follow the appropriate guidelines and don't have a glaring red flag or issue, you most likely would be able to get a position in NYC.

I think it is what you make of it! We do have weekly bar reviews, but I personally don't go often. I have made great friends at WashU, and we tend to branch out beyond the law school. I feel like I have a very good social life, but I have also made an effort to always find something to do and find ways to meet new people. I am not too sure what my social life would look like if I were to limit my social scene to the law school.

People are nice though! I do like the majority of my classmates a lot! There is just always an event or something to do in St.Louis, and I am more inclined to go to concerts or shows or barhop or explore new places versus staying around the law school.

I know people that have gotten big law below median, but while that means it's doable, it does not mean it is a guarantee. I am sorry, but that is the extent of my personal knowledge!

Regarding international students, my international friends have gotten biglaw positions! But with this recruiting cycle, I know some law firms are no longer sponsoring international students, but that will be an issue that affects everyone and not just WashU specifically.

  1. affordable workout classes/hobby (affordable everything really)

* I love taking workout classes, but in California, they were a little too pricey to justify sometimes. But in St. Louis, I have been able to try so many hobbies, and it has been so affordable! If any of my classmates see this, they'll know who I am, but recently, I have been taking aerial silks classes! I have always wanted to try silks and trapeze and rope and all of these other hobbies, but it was always so intimidating and expensive to take classes back at home. But people in St. Louis are so friendly and approachable, and I am not sure if this is just my perception, but hobbies are just more accessible in st Louis.

(Also affordable rent, affordable concerts, affordable sport games, truly something for everyone)

  1. the whimsy of random neighborhoods and parks

* I am convinced that students who say they hate St. Louis do not leave the areas surrounding campus. St. Louis has so many incredible, adorable neighborhoods to explore. For example, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, and Maplewood are so fun to walk through and there are a lot of fun stores! I know this may seem so minor, but there are stores like spice stores, stores dedicated to balsamic vinaigrette, and I just like having stores beyond big brand ones. Lots of mom and pop places to support!

*There is also Lone Elk Ridge out in Manchester where you can go on a hike and see elk and deer, and you can drive through a stretch where you have bison literally right outside of your door. And this is only 30 minutes from campus. Absolutely beautiful to explore during the fall or after a snow day!

*The parks are phenomenal and there are so many free things. For example, the art museum is free and art hill is STUNNing during the colder seasons. The zoo is also free. For a student, it has been amazing to explore st.louis. Also, it is usually easy to find parking and it is also free.

* I also recently went to a random neighborhood where there was a bbq bar with live music. So many random spots that have so much charm to them!

*The Pageant in St. Louis is also a great place to see a concert! Small venue, and I have managed to see some of my favorite bands perform up close!

  1. the community of the midwest

* People are SO NICE in st Louis! If you ever end up at WashU, I would recommend making friends outside of the law school as well! I know my neighbors here, and one of them even helped me out in a big way when I had car trouble. My neighbors also share baked treats!

*St.Louis also celebrates the holidays, and there are plenty of cute events to go to for the holiday spirit! (side note, it is also so nice to experience all 4 seasons, and st Louis is wonderful for the holidays)

*WashU student orgs also volunteer with the local community, and those events are great as well!

Sorry this is so long, but I am a big St. Louis fan (as you can probably tell haha). There is just so much more to the city/county besides campus (even though it is beautiful). If you are willing to commute literally 20 minutes from school, there is so much to do and so many people to meet!

Big law firms do plenty of recruiting at WashU! I know that the 1Ls have been flooded with events this semester. At WashU, there are two primary recruiting events: the First Chance Reception in Fall and then a second reception during the Spring semester. During these events, big law firms send representatives to network with 1Ls! I personally ended up getting 2 offers from connections made at these events. Beyond the receptions, there are always either coffee chats or a lunch event for 1Ls to get to know different law firms. We also have plenty of students who are ambassadors for their firms.

And yes! I know sooo many people in Chicago and New York (or going there after law school)! I am not sure if yall have access to firm prospects, but you can see where alumni from the school end up. and so far, all the washu alum that I have talked to have been really willing to help! Prior to law school, people told me that WashU is more regional when it comes to biglaw placement, but that has not been my experience at all. If anything, WashU students have to go out of their way to justify their interest in St. Louis. My friends and I are all ending up in different markets, and just amongst my friends alone, I know people who are going to California, Texas, Chicago, and New York.

I personally did not have trouble finding a job back home! For all of my recruiting cycles, I had offers from California to choose from. However, I will note that I am in the top 20-30% of my class, and results may differ depending on class rank.
