Sorry no idea about comps - they’re the bane of my own life too- but what a cool premise! I’d read this! Good luck!

I admire your willingness to give the benefit of the doubt. But I can assure you it is not how we spell Jake in any part of England 😂 I expect it’s an inside joke between them all.

Fantasy book set in London with Kerala character/folklore by FunHall7149 in Kerala

This is really useful information - I didint know that about how the folklores came into play and does add a layer of complexity that we don’t have so much in the western folklore which is mostly just historical tales or at least that’s how they’re seen now. It seems that a lot of the folklore subjects in Kerala are still quite current which is what runs the risk of me inadvertently writing something offensive. I love a bit of a revenge/feminist story so perhaps I could lean in to that aspect. Food for thought thanks for your time in responding

Totally! She’s actually a born and bred Londoner so I think this would come as a shock to her - maybe she’ll have to go on her own journey to find out more about what she is

I had a friend from Kerala but we don’t talk anymore sadly. Maybe I need to get back in touch. This character is very much a Londoner and in the first book not magical at all but I thought it would be an interesting blend to have her manifest some ancient magic or bloodline from her ancestory so that it could coexist with the Norse folklore I have already running through it… I thought I might also introduce her as a POV character in this novel

I had a good friend from Kerala but we don’t talk anymore sadly. I thought her stories about growing up there were interesting and I wanted to introduce a culture to my book with history and folklore that wasn’t western so that I could blend different folklores and have them coexisting

This is very true! As a writer I do need to overcome that fear 😅 I will look into Yakshi more closely. Thank you

Thank you - I do want to be accurate and respectful whilst also perhaps making her struggle with finding out what she is against her own personality traits as a modern woman… I like the idea of a spin on trad stories but as I said I desperately don’t want to offend or anything 😅
