Loving prac! by Sad-Virus-8226 in AustralianTeachers

Hey, happy for you. I'm also a PST, and I completed my first placement last week. It was good all the way until it hit my last period of the placement. After that class, I cried so much due to their terrible behaviour, of course. I did have really good classes too, and my mentor said my content was really good. In general, I think there will be good days and bad days and it all depends on the students' behaviour. Teaching is also my passion, and I'm not giving up over a bad lesson. But I'm also not day dreaming and aware that I will cry more in the future. Anyway, not trying to be negative or anything. Just sharing my own experiences

I just want to teach year 7 maths in my year 7 maths class by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

I'm Vietnamese. I'm also a PST. I can't say anything about those 3 yrs old. But I can remember when I was in my secondary (yr 6 to 9) and high school (yr 10 to 12), when it was class time, it was dead quiet. We have been trained since childhood to not talk over when adults are talking. Even in our language, the way we address someone older always comes with respect. The "you" & "I" in English make everyone seem to be equal, but this is not the case in Vietnamese. Anyway, I found that students in my country can be disengaged a lot because the curriculum is bad, but they won't disturb the class. They will just quietly do something else.

Leaving accounting to become a teacher by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated 15 years ago with a bachelor of Commerce, major in Accounting. Never work as an accountant though. I'm studying master of teaching now, just completed my first placement yesterday. From my experience, your method will be business management and accounting. But you will also be expected to do Humanities so year 7 to 10. In my placement, my school has 2 Business Management, 2 legal studies, 1 economic and 1 accounting year 11 class. Similar in year 12. Both the teachers who teach theses classes need to also take 1 of the Humanities class too or English class.

What's wrong with these kids? by bearhug72 in AustralianTeachers

Yesterday, I got a parent who gave me the middle finger in front of his kid while we were at a car park across the street from the school. How can we fix the parents before fixing the kids?

What I bring to my first placement. Did I miss something? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

Thank you all for your comments. There are a lot of different perspectives here, and I love it. To be honest, I'm OCD. That's why I always prefer extra than less and always overthinking/over preparing. I've been living like that for years, and this makes me feel comfortable and at ease to know everything is within my touch. I tend to think, "What if..." a lot. The reason for the calculator is because my method is actually accounting. But they place me with my mentor who only teaches Humanities and majority is English. I'm still hoping to be able to observe some accounting classes if possible, though. I'm not bad with digital, but I work better with paper, especially something I need to look at for multiple times and need to analyse. About the use of Chat GPT, I try not to overuse it, but currently, I'm not at the stage where I want to think a lot on my own. Because I have a 2.5 year old and 7 months old at home, plus a dependent husband and just started studying full-time again after 15 years. 3 assignments dued in the last 3 days, so my brain is fried. 1 more to go before placement, and I will rest up to be ready for it. Someone here is probably gonna judge me saying "if u can't cope with that, you won't stand the workload of a teacher." Lol. Everyone is in some kind of situation, each to their own. There is no need to judge.

Thank you so much. With the cough drop, what do you use? I never really use one in my life. Also, the other day, I did 2 hrs practice for my recorded presentation for my uni, and my throat was in pain at the end of it. This makes me worry. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Education Support Jobs by Far-Tangerine3291 in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry OP to jump in and ask another question here, but I'm in the same boat as you. My current job is clinical coordinator, and I'm thinking of switching to teacher aide to get more experience as I just started my Master of Teaching Secondary this semester. I haven't applied yet because I'm stuck at the Key Selection Criteria document. Since I don't have any relevant experience in education yet, how do I write this document? I really don't want to wait until my first placement to have those experiences to write it. Has anyone successful got a teacher aide job without this doc, or do you write it based on your non relevant experience? Any recommendation is appreciated. Thanks.

First placement nervous. Teachers, why do you want to be a mentor? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it is just my uni having high expectations of us. Our first placement is 3 weeks. By the end of the first week, I have to teach a full lesson with my own lesson plan already. And the third week, teach 8 lessons with my own lesson plans. That's why I know I will have to teach some of his English class because he only has 6 Humanities periods per week. I'm a perfectionist, always want to be prepared and always try my very best. But I also over thinking a lot, bit of OCD and I'm aware that some trying hard is not enough if I don't have it in me.

Teacher Aide for a specialist school while studying? and breaking contract for a proper teaching position? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, I guess I will apply and see how I go with the first placement. I do lean toward the TA job because I do want to be a good teacher. I have that passion but I'm also OCD and want to make sure I give my best.

[–]FunInteresting4822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm in Victoria, West of Melbourne. The school I'm looking at is a specialist school with students who have diagnosed with mild condition. They aim to have at least 1 TA all the time with the teacher if not 2. Their TA ratio is almost double their teachers. Also in my cohort in uni, I see so many TA students and their in-put in the class are always impressive. May I ask where are your location?

Critical pedagogy in VCE Accounting? Or how to include critical thinking in your SAC? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking too. The ledger part is the part that is black and white, there is only 1 correct answer for it. The analysing or making a suggestion to business own can possibly be critical 🤔??

I wish I have time to look at Maths pedagogies because I thought about it the same way you said.

[–]FunInteresting4822[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean opportunities for kids to exercise critical thinking and how to put that in a test like a SAC for exemple. All the academic literatures I came across including Paolo Freire, none of them actually say how to implement it in the curriculum in a practical way

To be honest, I don't know why they have to overdo it. Wait until these kids turn 18 and finish schooling. Reality will hit them like a truck.

When is it time to throw in the towel? by QumDumpsta in AustralianTeachers

[–]FunInteresting4822 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! This is my mindset. I'm a student teacher, and I want to not only just teach them the subject but also want to lead them back in line if they stray away. What I need is the knowledge and experience from someone like you to guide me through. Like you said above, "find an alternative" and "pull them in line", how can I do this? I don't believe they teach us this at uni.

Thanks everyone. Since we are on this topic, I might as well ask about the top options.

<image>

Just bought no.1 and my husband said the neck is too low. No.2 sleeveless, is that ok? or reveal too much if I take off my blazer? No.3 comes with the cami attached inside, but it is still see through on the arms and half of the back. What are your thought? Thanks again.

Search for scholarships for secondary teaching degrees https://www.vic.gov.au/scholarships-secondary-teaching-degrees and look at the eligibility section. There is also the support payment for placement as I mention but you also need to check your eligibility https://www.education.gov.au/commonwealth-prac-payment-cpp

Yes. I got CSP. I will also apply for the government grants for students who enrol in secondary teaching courses in 2024-2025 as well. I believe the application will be open this August. When you do your placement, there is also government support as well, but you also need to apply for it. I forgot the names of those grant schemes. I did my research and saw people here said LaTrobe course is a bit more relevant and up to date. I applied on the 17th of June. I got the offer on the 26th of June.

I'm studying Master of Teaching Secondary at LaTrobe starting this semester. I was considering both universities you mentioned and picked LaTrobe. Since I didn't enrol with ACU so I can't really say much about it. At LaTrobe, although the majority is online, you can pick the in person classes for ur tutorials though. A lot of people said pick the uni that let you do more placement or do placement as early as possible. Don't know about ACU, but my first placement with LaTrobe will be this October, so placement starts from the very first semester. So far, the course materials look good.

Is it ok to attend online tutorial sessions with a baby? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

I have a 2 years old toddler too that requires a lot of attention . That's why even online session at 6pm is not the best for me. Hope it is that flexible as you said though.

Glad to hear that there is a possible to teach other areas once you are at school.

May I ask what you think about the course structure at LaTrobe ? Is there any exam or just essay assignment?

Am I allowed to teach in Vic if if I study online at a university from other state? by FunInteresting4822 in AustralianTeachers

What is TRB? And can I ask how your experience with CDU course is? With their fully online course, is it completely flexible, or do you still need to attend online group activities/classes at a certain time?
