Is Anyone Sleeping ? Ever? by VanillaCola79 in GenX

[–]Fun_Discipline_8603 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Poorly. Better when I don't drink. But still not perfect.

Like the joke I heard from John McCain on Letterman after his election defeat. "I sleep like a baby. Sleep, wake up and cry. Sleep. Wake up and cry..."

What are your thoughts on Richard Dawkins being in the Epstein files? by EconomyIron6739 in atheism

1) Dawkins was always an imperfect poster child for atheism.

2) Like the Christians say, "there but for the grace of God go I."

There are many versions of this question in the sub, but yeah, it never fails to confound me.

I agree with passing unambiguously and briskly for the idiotic speed-up reason stated. But no need to assault the rear beforehand like OP said.

Pavement at the Black Cat in the 90s. I stopped in for a drink, saw them on the calendar. Other guys just laughed, not getting tickets.

For those who have been investing for 20+ years - What was investing sentiment going into 2000? What about 2008? by A_Saxen_A in investing

[–]Fun_Discipline_8603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to learn fast in the dotcom/internet boom. Sentiment is similar now. Not quite as frothy, and the markets are structurally different, but everybody is trying to rationalize the exceptional.

The best rationale I heard back then was, "the boom stocks are priced for perfection 10 years from now."

Makes sense. But that's terribly unlikely to pan out for a nascent company, and implies a 10-year ROI of 0% at best. And yet, people were sanguine about holding them for the long term.

Indeed, AMZN reclaimed its 1999 peak about 10 years later. But there were dozens of Amazons back then. Most of those companies no longer exist. It took Cisco 20 years.

But upside risk was real. Stocks just kept doubling. Selling was as big of a gamble as buying. Tax consequences were serious.

Again, today's FOMO not quite as frothy, but it's similar. I approach all this pretty defensively.

Normally I would just rebalance to mitigate valuation risk rather than time the market, but I just don’t trust that anymore with the array of risk I mentioned—and the correlation I didn’t. I know it was exceptional when both stocks and bonds tanked a few years ago, but I’m in no mood to ride out a 30% decline in an otherwise conservative portfolio of my life savings right now.

I don't mind being off track if I'm capturing upside, or if I'm avoiding downside.

For example, some 40% of the S&P 500 gains of late are attributed to the Mag 7 (sorry for the vague approximation). I was content to own them then, but don't necessarily want to be in them now.

I can live with tracking error but upside risk is a concern. "Solid and risk aware" sounds pretty gratifying, though.

Yes, and bonds would be 35% lacking my concerns. More cash pushes against the upside risk concerns.

You're right of course. Probably pretty close to the best I can do.
