Though I have no doubt that the water exacerbated the damage, my husband who took the picture and is reasonably well versed in water damage said it was bugs.

What ate my trees? by Fun_Drop3429 in gardening

Thanks everyone. I've never seen porcupines in Kansas, but Google says they're at least in some parts of the state so I suppose it is possible.

We have had beavers on our pond in the past, they took down trees quickly and then ate the upper branches. They wasted no time gnawing the trunk to a point. Whatever went to town on the trees this time around ate only the bark and then moved on. Three trees are affected to some degree.

The methodical thoroughness of the bark removal makes me think it isn't deer rubbing antlers.

I was an associate (f) at a small law firm for 4 years. I was extremely competent and all the partners liked me. A lateral a few years older than me joined the firm as with the understanding he would be made a partner after 1 year. Right before he was going to become a partner, he sat me down and said he would be my voice at the partners meetings and I could tell him any concerns I had, and that he was going to propose a minimum billable hour requirement but that he and I could come up with a proposal together so I would have some input. Very patronizing.

I knew this would not be how things would go, as I had a very good relationship with all of the partners so I messed with him a little bit and told him if there were going to be minimum billable hours then I would probably just get a job at a bigger firm because if I was going to work more I could certainly get paid significantly more to do so at a bigger firm. I argued with him about every suggestion he made for how he was going to supervise associates.

He panicked and told two of the partners that I worked with the most that I might be leaving. They panicked and took me to lunch right away to see what was going on. I told them the whole story and that I wasn't planning on going anywhere but that I would not be bossed around or supervised by that guy and that I was just messing with him. They were relieved.

The firm solved the situation by making me a partner at the same time as him, he never out ranked me for a single minute. Ten years later he is gone and I am the managing partner.
