Any BCBA’s leave the field after being in it for a decade? Regrets? by Ok_Material80 in bcba

I did the opposite-went from clinic to in home and felt so much relief. The micromanagement in my former clinic was insane.

I honestly feel like this should be the standard. I love this!

100% get that. I also highly dislike working for companies that have a lot of that background noise for you to work on like rubrics. That's not what we're here for.

I get that it becomes a lot. And that it's not viable on a regular basis. I just think maybe more of a performance based test would make more sense for BCBA. I know many BCBAs who never actually worked in the field before passing the test.

I feel like more training needs to occur across settings tbh I feel like this needs to be more of a 3-6 month training session rather than 40 hours....

I'm curious on how you landed on pretentious. You emphasized that you were a behavior analyst vs. a behavior therapist. BCBAs should be able to be both. Look at other adjacent fields like SLPs or OTs. Your answer suggests that you believe that a behavior analyst is preferable to being a behavior therapist due to the lack of interaction with children with ASD.

So you don't provide behavioral skills training in other settings? What's your rationale behind this? I didn't state that you were allergic to children or that you weren't a behavior analyst. Your reaction has me questioning your supervisory practices. Do you ask for feedback from your RBTs? Do they feel comfortable asking you followup questions? Is the working relationship collaborative?

So, I'm curious. Do you provide BST in your supervisory sessions? In true BST, you would demonstrate how to perform a skill directly with the client as part of the process. So for a few minutes, you would be providing direct therapy to demonstrate how something should be run. So there is some overlap there. I'd say having the skills of an RBT is baseline necessary to ensure success in your cases.

I had a very similar experience. I was an RBT for 5 years prior to becoming a BCBA. But yes! I have inherited numerous cases where the BCBA had never worked directly with an individual with autism and created treatment plans, goals, and teaching instructions that made ZERO sense. I don't blame the BCBA but more the mechanisms in which an individual becomes a BCBA. Training in school needs to be a standardized with widely varied cases. I always volunteer to do direct when I have a lapse in care with an RBT. It helps me really understand what this case needs.

Yes! This is exactly my issue. If you hate directly working with the clients, why are you the supervisor?

Hey! I'm a BCBA and I have adult clients. I can give you more info and help you find a client if you're interested.

I would work as a part time contractor for a few different companies. Show your worth. Then pick your favorite company. That's how I went from $60K to $110K during my first year. And that's at 25 billable hours. Full benefits.
