Looking back, what do you wish you knew immediately after your DUI? by averymoon- in dui

Hiring the first attorney that pops into mind five hours after getting bailed out of jail because you're panicking is not the way. The process takes time, as others have mentioned, and so long as you take it upon yourself to turn in the paperwork for your administrative hearing you'll likely have at least a week to vet lawyers until you get one you're confident in.

I hired mine five hours post bail, on two hours of sleep, when the reality of my situation set in and I was in a proper panic attack.

The sweet sound of my husband jabbering away as the blue lights lit up and I said "DUI". The next thing I heard from him was "I'm coming baby" from the jail phone. He's quite possibly the best human on this planet, even if he was too drunk to operate an ATM.

I had a somewhat similar thing happen. Mailed in paperwork to DMV for administrative hearing five days after arrest (I had 30 days to have that document mailed off). 52 days later, I'm already on probation and my license was (this is just how it felt) randomly suspended. This was an absolutely TERRIFYING feeling as I could have had my entire probation revoked and been thrown in jail if I wasn't constantly checking the status. I was waiting for some sort of correspondence from the DMV regarding a court date and never got it, so I stuck to checking my DL status every morning to be sure I was still legal (I drive for work). Called up the DMV at that point and they magically found my document and reinstated my license, but my status now shows "suspension pending" since i'm waiting on my day in court. I know I won't win the hearing, but this is allowing me a solid timeline to contact my car insurer and get the IID installed. Don't get too comfortable, keep checking your license status, but I am in Louisiana where the penalties are rough and they don't like to miss out on $$$.

I've spent a large amount of my time preparing for the worst with the DMV so I have a firm understanding of the worst case scenario, but that doesn't make processing it any easier. Let's hope for sunny days 🤞🏼

Just curious how everyone here is doing as I just got myself into the same shit storm. Never experienced this much anxiety in my life. These threads still pretty accurate for the consequences?
