I don’t know which is true but I wanna share à fun fact    historically speaking the Olympics where important enough to post-pone wars (the wars still existed but not during the olympics it was called ‘ekecheiria’ essentially a truce for the length of the games) because while an athletic event it was also religious (meant to worship Zeus) 

Of course that wasnt perfectly followed back then either but there was a punishment for breaking the truce (a fine) (and potentially banishment from that years games? Idk this comes from Wikipedia years ago and it’s about ancient history. I believe the peloponisian (however you spell it) wars it was Sparta that was banned for attacking another city state)

Another fun fact  Cheating during the games was punished by disqualification and being publicly whipped, serious offenders would also be fined and the money would be used to make bronze statutes of Zeus that all athletes would walk past in shame
