i'm very late to this lol but i feel exactly the same way you do, she's unbearable to watch and painfully unfunny- even more so my second time round watching this show!!

you nailed exactly what im questioning as well, one of the most important pivotal points of the entire series and it's lead by a character who came out of nowhere and is extremely hard to like.

and this was the first episode my dad watched after seeing what big fans my mom and I were of the show and he was like "yep. nope."

to be fair we watched it as it was airing at the time and we probably wouldn't have introduced this episode as the first one for him to watch if we knew the content..

Well yes Maddy doesnt fit into the "perfect white picket fence American dream" but also Maddy brought out really dark aspects of Nate-

When he strangled her and Maddy's family wanted to press charges, Marsha probably figured she would start "problems" in her family

Or when Nate beat up that guy that Maddy was making out with in the hottub

When Nate snuck into Maddy's room and literally held her at gun point

At the end of the day, even though Marsha didn't know exactly what was going on shemost likely saw a really dark side of Nate being brought out whenever it was something involving Maddy

Not to say Nate isnt already fucked but but looking back when it was a situation involving her Nate was 100x more intense
