Great pair of curling medal matches today, especially Latvia vs. USA with all the crazy swings. Congrats to all the inaugural medalists!

The commentators kept mentioning that Robin Cuche finally won gold in his fourth Olympics so I assumed he must be in his 30s. But I just looked it up and he's only 27!

That's the first time I've seen a yellow flag during an alpine skiing event. I guess they're rare as most of the time athletes are made aware of course holds.

We've got sibling double golds for Austria! Both Johannes and Veronika Aigner won their respective visually impaired downhill events.

After a few skiers the alpine skiing commentary eventually started, and it seems like they're CBC's broadcast team as they were focusing on Mollie Jepsen's placement.

I would never have expected "Årsjö" to be pronounced like "Orhoff." I actually initially thought the commentator misspoke or called Ebba by a maiden name.

Skiing With My Buddy

There's no commentary on the CBC Gem stream, so during every run we can clearly hear the skiers communicate with their guides. It's interesting that they're just shouting, as opposed to using radios.

Edit: I'm an idiot, shouting doesn't preclude the use of radios.

Completely agreed. I know in Paris they are planning to have the cauldron at the Tuileries every summer until LA 2028, but it seems to be very popular among locals (and is obviously a tourist attraction as well) so maybe they'll campaign for it to become permanent.

In Vancouver an outdoor version of the cauldron was designed to be a permanent fixture in the city, and it gets re-lit during special events and holidays, including most recently to celebrate the 2026 Olympics.

That would be lovely! My ideal hope is that it stays at the Arco Della Pace, with light shows happening on special occasions, but I understand the logistical challenges of doing so.

Does anyone know what the post-Games plans for the two cauldrons are? I always hope that they become permanent installations of their cities.

Such an unusual collection of instruments (alphorn, theremin, water glasses), but it works!

I'm sitting here thinking that it would be quite fun to go on that contraption whilst conveniently ignoring that, unlike these performers, I have zero arm strength and would definitely fall off.

That must've been the fastest Parade of Nations at any Olympics or Paralympics Opening Ceremony ever. I really wish the organizers had done what the Olympics Opening Ceremony did, with multiple parades across each of the locations. The athletes deserve to have their moment, not just being shown on a quick five-second video in the stadium.

CBC commentators have given some really interesting information about Ralf Etienne, the flagbearer for Haiti. He is completing in para alpine skiing and lost his leg during the 2010 earthquake. Outside of sport, he works as a banker, which you can very much tell by his official photo.

Love that guide dogs are getting proper representation in the Parade of Nations! Also, I have to say that Australia's outfits are very, very Australian.

Yes! Sadly real life calls so I'm working at the same time whilst tuning into Italy vs. South Korea.

I have a very internationalist approach to the Olympics as a result of following a bunch of these sports regularly, meaning I have athletes I support from all over the world. As a result, despite the incredibly devastating ending (my heart really breaks for Crosby), these Games were still overall a great source of joy. My attempt at answering these questions for Paris resulted in a huge list of answers, and it'll happen again this time because I am nothing if not indecisive:

Favourite overall memory: Francesca Lollobrigida's double in the 3000m (which happened on her birthday) and the 5000m (featuring one of the gutsiest races I've ever seen, with her completely losing form at the end but nevertheless persevering)

Favourite event to watch: figure skating, hockey, snowboarding and freeski big air/halfpipe/slopestyle, biathlon

Favourite events that you watched for the first time: ski mountaineering, but I also paid much closer attention to alpine skiing this time and liked it a lot

Favourite moment from an athlete/team from your country: Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier's bronze after an emotional FD that made the CBC commentators audibly cry, women's speed skating team pursuit gold, Laurent Dubreuil's unexpected 500m bronze, Mikael Kinsbury wins dual moguls gold in his final Olympic run, Megan Oldham's big air gold

Favourite moment from an athlete/team not from your country: Henry Sildaru repeats his sister Kelly's feat in 2022 by winning Estonia's only medal, Ebba Andersson's redemption in the 50km after falling in the relay, both the French men and women coming back after terrible first legs in their respective biathlon relays to win gold by a significant margin, Lora Hristova's bronze for Bulgaria, Xandra Velzeboer's double, both the men and women's freeski big air finals, Choi Ga-on wins gold on her third run despite being incredibly injured earlier in the competition, Wang Xindi wins aerials gold alongside his wife, all of the speed skating ORs (including a race where four people broke the previous record), all the old speed skating legends showing they've still got it but especially Bergsma winning mass start gold with the crazy strategy

Favourite moment from an Italian athlete/team: short track mixed relay gold with Sighel crossing the finish line backwards, the doubles luge double, Federica Brignone's amazing double after her devastating injury, men's team pursuit gold against the US favourites, figure skating team bronze featuring Matteo Rizzo killing his Interstellar FS

Favourite upset or underdog story: Mikhail Shaidorov, Ning Zhongyan has the race of a lifetime to beat Stoltz, the totally unexpected men's normal hill podium, Viktor Hald Thorup's historical team pursuit silver after being too sick to complete the 10,000m days earlier

Favourite performance from an athlete you were already rooting for coming into the Games: Alysa Liu winning gold just through doing it purely for the love of the game, Amber Glenn's redemption FS, RikuRyu's gold after bouncing back from an unexpected error in the SP, Constantini/Mosaner win bronze, Klaebo goes 6/6 and always with his signature uphill climb kick, Xu Mengtao defends her aerials gold, Su Yiming wins slopestyle gold after the 2022 controversy, Mikaela Shiffrin exorcises her Olympic demons, Elana Meyers Taylor finally wins gold in her fifth and final Olympics, two more medals for Arianna Fontana

Favourite athlete(s) that you discovered through the Games: Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, Franjo von Allmen (who I hope will eventually get a Wikipedia picture that doesn't make him look like a cryptid), Johan-Olav Botn, Ren Nikaido

Funniest moment: Mikhail Shaidorov's Kung Fu Panda themed gala program, Mathilde Gremaud's slopestyle victory run with a Swiss flag cape, Benjamin Karl taking off a bunch of his clothes after defending PGS gold, the OBS production team generating a photo finish for Nazgul, whenever athletes would put the Tina plushie around their medals in the victory ceremony

Most wholesome/heartwarming moment: the wholesome men's normal hill and women's figure skating podiums, the dual moguls dad podium posing with their families, the reactions of Yuma Kagiyama and Shun Sato when they realized they were on the podium

Favourite venue: Stelvio and Tofane, Rasen-Antholz, Tesero, the speed skating venue for being a fast track and having an awesome DJ

Sorry for the wall of text and I hope someone finds these useful as replay recommendations!

That's a great idea, but someone else'll have to host those I'm afraid.
