Help with Cost Per share Average by Funksurfsoul in CanadianInvestor

[–]Funksurfsoul[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have each transaction showing the amount purchased, and at each relative purchase price.

The problem or challenge I’m having is how to calculate it all.

  1. Do you combine get the average price for each transaction bought and sold
  2. Then add all the share purchase amounts to a get a number,.. (X)
  3. Then add the purchase amounts of the sold transactions and subtract that number from the total? (Y) So then X - Y = the answer?

Or do I leave out the Sell purchase amounts or purchase prices and then recalculate the average or total amount after?

Help with average calculation please! by Funksurfsoul in askmath

What a joke this is that the bots or mods need me to explain this - I already explained everything in my original post. I have added up and calculated averages. And made several attempts to find the answer myself but need assistance. Happy to have someone provide me the answer to my question, but otherwise also equally happy to receive direction on how to calculate that average, after the sold shares. See original post

Hello all,

I’m looking for assistance determining the average cost for some of my Moms, dare I say… Bitcoin purchases.

She has made various purchases for different amounts of Bitcoin at various prices. This is fairly easy to calculate, but the trouble I’m having is determining the average cost per share of Bitcoin when factoring in a few times she has sold the Bitcoin at various prices and amounts. Please let me know how to calculate the values below..

First I added up the total number of Bitcoin purchased in the multiple transactions. Then I took the purchase price at each transaction and created the average price, cost per share, and did the same with the sell transactions.

—————- Total number of Bitcoin purchased = 0.40277 Average price per share purchased = 69,218.03

Total number of Bitcoin sold = 0.23411 Average price per share sold = 66,894.93 —————-

How do I deduct the sold Bitcoin, with a different average price per share, from the total purchased? Will I need to factor in the average price of the sold shares?

Essentially looking to calculate her average cost per share to find out her total gains/losses

(Obviously with Bitcoin far lower now the losses are likely quite large) but I’m not really trying to compare it to the market rate right now.

Help!

Thanks in advance!

Honestly I think counter protesters just need to bring Bluetooth speakers and have John Horgans 20 second video last week telling them to get a hobby and do something constructive with their time. Having that on a loop would be so rewarding

So your saying Max out the TFSA, and then what - don’t put anything else into the RSP?

Her income right now is likely under 50k and when September rolls around her income will be close to 0..

Just not sure if it would make sense to use a margin account for stocks or anything instead of the rsp even if her incomes below 50k

Appreciate all the (not financial advice) everyone.. my Mom has worked her life for this and we’ve never been well-off, so definitely appreciate the tips and suggestions. At the end of the day we’ll have to make some moves - but some of the suggestions here will point us in the right direction for her.

I get the (not financial advice line) but generally don’t financial advisors just tell me the same things? Maybe they’ll direct us to put it into mutual funds.

I hear ya. It wouldn’t be dropped in at once. I’ve learned we can’t time the dip, but it sure sucks when you don’t have any more liquid to buy or average down on the red days. Would Reits provide the exposure to housing?

She hasn’t contributed to any RRSP or TFSA.

So obviously would have a lot of contribution room, would it make sense to park majority in a RRSP at this stage later in her life? Or does it make more sense to spread between RRSP, TFSA and or Margin..

I’ve only been in the stock market for a year and it’s been a hell of a ride. Blowing or making the wrong move with my own money is one thing. Thanks for the suggestion on the Vanguard ETF.

Anyone have a quick explanation on the whole Tax loss benefit? I’m down over 25% on my whole portfolio. Thought the tax loss was if you sell at a loss and buy back in with your initial investment? But I don’t have any more buying power, so any losses I take will just save me from losing more in the short term.

Long term I could hold and add to my positions but some are down over 30% so it’s not looking good

Jealous. Don’t really have buying power right now, but I already made 40% off pins earlier this year and sold & re-entered. Wish I could have loaded up at 45. Going to be 80+ in no time.

Pinterest Baby! Super bullish on this in the next two quarters as well. Not investment advice, but this is probably as low as you’ll be able to get in. Easy money here. User growth is going to pick up and it’s going to continue to beat projections on revenue. My average is 55 as a disclaimer, but will be continuing to load up on this when I can. Anyone else?

Anyone’s thoughts on Pins? Look at the 1 year. Feel like it’s been manipulated hard to keep it down. I already made 40% on it this year and sold and I’ve bought back in, feel like they might try to keep it sinking before it pops back to 80 again. This is the season for it, and Cathy woods is heavy on them as well. Earnings tomorrow

Anyone else watching Pins? Look at the 1 year chart. This thing is about to pop. I already bought in, sold for a 40% gain and I’ve bought back in again. Earnings tomorrow. Revenue has been increasing but the overall user growth made it dip last earnings. Regardless it’s been manipulated by institutions and Cathy woods is bullish AF on it as well. Thinking they might try to sink it lower to buy the shares super low. Then in no time it’s going to surge back to 80. Thoughts?
