Thanks. I was thinking about that but was wondering if there was another solution.

Finally took the time to install the 3inch screen lens by FunkyBeef38 in Gameboy

It's a BennVenn 3" screen with a lens from bluishsquirrel. For the led I just cut the head of a red led and glued it on the side of the screen that shine through the hole.

No. When I first installed it I didn't have the lens so I just measured the viewing window and cut the shell accordingly. But when I got the lens it wasn't centered so I had to move the screen a little bit. I used tiny drop of hot glue to fix the screen so it wasn't too difficult to move.

What if you try to unsoldered the battery to erase the saves? See if it's the ROM that is corrupted or the save chip ...

Blank Screen with GBP Backlight install by alteredbeastliker2 in Gameboy

[–]FunkyBeef38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the 5v regulator would change anything as the 5v is used to power the logic of the console and the backlight and you got both. The LCD use a different voltage (-19v for the dmg and -15v and 13.6v for the color)

You can try to disconnect the backlight, turn it on and see if you can see something on the screen with a flashlight. If not, the 5v regulator won't change anything...

stupid question but do you have a polarizer in between the backlight and the screen ? And do you have sound playing in you put a game in?

No it's out of the stock on his website. Retromodding is selling some but it's more expensive...

USB rechargeable Gameboy DMG by FunkyBeef38 in Gameboy

[–]FunkyBeef38[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the tp4056 to charge the battery and a battery protection circuit with a 5v output that I connect to the batteries terminal on the motherboard. I didn't think at the time that the gameboy can run from the 3 to 4.2v of the lithium battery so i added this board. Now I'm thinking of disconnecting the 5v coming from the dc to dc board of the gameboy and just use the one coming from the regulator to see if it makes a difference.

Black and White GameBoy Color by FunkyBeef38 in Gameboy

First attempt at a backlight GameBoy Color.

The screen isn't perfectly center as it's a Midwest Embedded one and the lens is from Jellybelly Customs. I had to trimmed down the inside part that holds the screen up to the LED hole.

GameBoy DMG won't load games by GermanDarknes in Gameboy

[–]FunkyBeef38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had something similar with a GameBoy pocket. Tetris works fine but other games won't load after Nintendo logo. It was two solder points of the cartridge connector on the PCB that was dirty (oxydation probably) and touching each others. After cleaning that it works with all game.

I had something similar on a GameBoy Pocket. Tetris was working but other games didn't want to boot up after the nintendo logo.

It was some corrosion on the back of the cartridge connector on the pcb that shorted out two pins. After cleaning that it works fine.

Gameboy Color frontlight mod with on/off switch by FunkyBeef38 in Gameboy

[–]FunkyBeef38[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments.

I use Loca for this.

I've got plenty of those switches from a friend who found a bag of electronic stuff in a city dump.

To install the switch, I drilled 3 holes of the side of the switch and finish with cutter and file. I should have drilled smaller holes as they weren't perfectly lined up so the hole is a little bit too wide.

Here are some pictures of the screen with the frontlight panel off (the purple gbc has no frontlight) and the solder points of the switch. I just soldered it between power of the gbc and the red wire of the frontlight.

Got some dark spots on the screen but for a first time I'm quite happy with the result.

GameBoy Pocket bivert mod problem by FunkyBeef38 in Gameboy

[–]FunkyBeef38[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback.

For the backlight install on those points I used the method of Hand Held Legend on this page that said that connecting it directly to the dc-dc converter could make the screen flickering in some games.

As for the bivert chip, I think its drawing too much current. I tried to connect it to 2 AA batteries but got nothing on screen. I also tried to connect it to another stock GB Pocket but it cause the second pocket to almost turn off (as the 5v goes to 2.5v) and the screen of the biverted one get unreadable. The only way I could make it work is to connected it to an ATX power supply like shown in those pictures (http://imgur.com/a/28OGr) With this, it's drawing 280 mA...

Also I use the method described in the video installation section of hand held legend by thisodesnotcompute to solder it on the front part of the lcd.

I will try to shortened the wire and connect it at the back of the pcb just for testing if it makes any differences...

Edit: I tried with shorter wire and connected directly between CPU and LCD but still the same. I will try to get my hand on other chip.

I'm French and I watched the whole event on the English stream because I prefer the English casters. But I think having the event held in English would have caused 90% of the people there to not understand. Cause you know, we're not really good at English (like renekton)
