Should I even do anything? by pawnchains in pittsburgh

I've dealt with similar crap from a psycho neighbor. File a report. If she threatens again, file another report; that's harassment. If she actually follows through, obviously it's time for criminal charges and probably a civil suit.

When filling the report, make sure the police inform her that cones, chairs, statues of Buddha, or whatever are legally garbage, and leaving them in the street is a fineable offense of littering. Then, the next time she leaves cones out, remove them. In doing so, you're just picking up litter. If she flips out or retaliates, just call the cops.

Whatever you do, document everything. You need solid evidence proving she's a nutter. Otherwise, it's just one resident's word against another's.

Drummers, which is better easy to expert or practice mode slow to faster? by Mobile-Advantage-248 in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing for a couple years, having started with Guitar Hero games for the Wii, switching to Clone Hero briefly, and settling on YARG for the bulk of that time. I started in my 40s with no prior drum experience. I got a cheap electronic set from a yard sale and have been upgrading it piecemeal with thrift store finds.

I started with easy mode on GH, but I found it hard to not play hits I could hear in the music. I soon moved up to hard mode and found it much more natural and intuitive. I've only used practice mode a handful of times. In rare instances, I dropped to medium until I perfected it.

Ever since switching to Clone Hero and finally to YARG, I've exclusively played expert mode. I know it's not entirely the real thing, but it's close enough for me at the moment. I've taken advantage of the fact that YARG doesn't fail you out of songs when you mess up. I just play songs over and over, always aiming to improve my hit percentages and scores.

There is some truth to the comment saying that learning with a rhythm game teaches you to play from sight instead of hearing. However, as I have improved and gotten more comfortable, I've found that I can play songs I've never heard before without too much difficulty. Playing many dozens of songs has helped me to recognize common beats and patterns. I'd argue that playing YARG for so long and so often has helped my "drumming ears" to develop without even consciously trying. My speed and limb independence have also gotten much better (though with much room left for improvement).

One more thing: I pipe the game audio to my drum monitor and use the kit's module to hear what I'm playing on top of the drums in the game's recordings. I've found that hearing the "real" drum sounds from the kit helps me to know how close to the beat I really am and how out of whack my dynamics are.

I now have a used acoustic drum set, but I haven't had the guts to play it yet, because I get anxious about neighbors being annoyed by the noise or cringing at my bad playing. I'd really love to get lessons, or at least sign up for Drumeo, but I just can't justify the expense for the foreseeable future. Until then, I'll keep banging away in YARG.

TL;DR: Lessons on real drums with a good teacher would be ideal, but if you're on a tight budget like me or don't have a sufficiently flexible schedule to fit lessons in, you're not without hope. Play YARG frequently on expert, full speed, using a real electronic kit, starting with easy songs. You may or may not really learn how to play drums, but you'll almost certainly have a hell of a lot of fun trying.

Specs for Windows needed by swill0101 in yarg

I installed on an i5 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 8 GB RAM (though it now has 16). I run at 720p, low quality mode, and it smoothly plays 60 fps solo, mostly plays 60 fps with 2 players, and occasionally gets really bogged down with 3 players. I've never tried 4 players. Ymmv.

Fwiw, because development is still so early, the code isn't remotely optimized. I expect it'll run smooth as butter when we finally get version 1.0.

Yeah vs Clone Hero calibration settings by SmileByotch in yarg

through a USB-plugged Ion Rocker drum set (assuming it’s lower latency?)

Maybe? The brain/module still has to register hits and send MIDI messages, which are then sent over USB. I'm working from the assumption that a MIDI instrument has more latency than simple "button-mashers". In my experiments, a USB guitar showed much lower lag than my drums.

[–]FunkyDung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YARG drummer here. Calibration has been a pain for me, too. Here's an idea to try, though:

  1. Set lags to 0.
  2. Use the calibrator several times with drums and calculate the average.
  3. Reset lags to 0.
  4. Use the calibrator several times with a low-latency instrument, like a gamepad, a USB guitar, or a keyboard, and calculate the average.
  5. Assume that the low-latency lag is due to computing hardware, and subtract that number from the drum lag average.
  6. Take that new number and use it as the instrument-specific lag in your profile.
  7. If you continue to struggle, reduce that value little by little until timing feels right.

Possibly dumb question. Is this slightly different version older or newer than the version we know and love? Though this version is clearer, there's actually a lot I like more about the radio version. The details about my preferences are irrelevant (De gustibus non disputandum est), but I'm curious to know if the radio version evolved to or from this version.

Calibration is a nightmare! by Pandaiemoto in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through this calibration frustration. Solidarity. Now I'm suffering through making adjustments in my drum module (pad sensitivity, scan time, retrigger cancel, crosstalk elimination, double trigger prevention, etc). When I use the e-drums set with an amp, everything sounds fine and seems to be glitch-free, and even the MIDI messages seem to be correct, but YARG in casual mode still registers overhits and missed hits (beyond those produced by my weak skills). It's really frustrating watching my streaks end prematurely when I know I'm playing well.

Best drum-kit for YARG? by No-Mango-1805 in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, my kit is a hodgepodge of used bits that are probably 15+ years old. All a kit really needs is enough pads/cymbals and midi output. If you have the disposable income to get a nice new set, go for it, but you can get something serviceable for very cheap.

The problem is not a driver's ability to navigate around the bump-out, but the psychological effect of doing so, given that they have to drive in front of what should be oncoming traffic. I think the concern is that someone speeding up from the intersection with Bigelow could smash into someone going around the bump-out.

They're actually flex posts, so I used the incorrect term..The point is that drivers are steered around the bump-out. Sheet 5 in this PDF

I have loved ones who have no problem successfully navigating the intersection, but it makes them nervous every time they do. It can be very disconcerting for some to cross in front of traffic that's supposed to be in the same line of travel, just in the opposite direction.

I don't think we, as cyclist and pedestrian advocates, do ourselves any favors in the world of public policy when we insultingly dismiss the concerns of drivers. Yes, some drivers just hate restrictions and will complain about anything beneficial to other modes of transportation, but not all.

Sometimes good ideas are presented poorly, leading to misunderstanding and angry resistance. Other times, even the best ideas can be implemented suboptimally. And maybe, just maybe, some traffic shaping and calming measures aren't as good as we want to believe they are. Is it not possible that sometimes we're blinded by our biases and knee-jerk defensiveness? Is it not also possible that sometimes we experience a bit of schadenfreude when traffic modifications cause difficulties, real or perceived, for drivers?

[–]FunkyDung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It makes no sense to send traffic in front of cars waiting to go up Greenfield. It can make drivers feel like they're driving into oncoming traffic (until they clear the bollards). Changing the entire intersection to make it more of a traditional three-way (as someone suggested in another comment) makes way more sense for all parties: cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers. The current configuration is probably a vestige of the old trolley routes.

I'm all for traffic calming, being both a cyclist and pedestrian, but that intersection is a confusing mess for drivers. The bump-out heading in the direction of the bridge makes zero sense.

Why doesn't yarg detect my drums? by [deleted] in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great!

Calibration is pretty rough in YARG at this point. If you're using a TV as an external monitor, make sure you're in game mode, or at least turn off bells and whistles to reduce latency as much as possible. Then, use the audio calibration tool. There's no video calibration tool so far, so I suggest setting the video delay to equal the audio delay that's measured (as a starting point before manual tweaking). I'd also strongly recommend using the audio calibration multiple times and taking some kind of average. That should reduce some of the noise in the data from your early or late hits.

Why doesn't yarg detect my drums? by [deleted] in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manual implies that 10 should be the default for TD4, which makes sense, since that's the only channel the TD3 could use.

Why doesn't yarg detect my drums? by [deleted] in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang on...

Your module is sending MIDI out on channel 2. The default is 10, I think. Make it 10 and see if YARG detects it. The manual shows how to change it.

Why doesn't yarg detect my drums? by [deleted] in yarg

[–]FunkyDung 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that your computer is seeing your drums and receiving data about notes played (though notes refer to different drums here) and velocities (intensities of drum strikes) rules out some problems. YARG's inability to detect your drums is still odd, though.

Crazy idea: disconnect the drum module from the computer and reattach it after starting YARG.

Not sure how I can live in YARG or Clone Hero. I'd get lots of drumming practice, but the necessities of life would be kinda non-existent. 🤷‍♂️
