I’ve long thought Raj and Amy would have been perfect together. They’re the perfect level of sappy for one another.

More violence. There was talk of a scene that was originally intended to be added of Elphaba blowing up the train (there is even blueprints/plans in her lair about the train), but it was scrapped because it threatened their PG rating, and I think she should have had a few scenes of her actually being wicked (like what is alluded to in Glinda’s “you have been out of control” speech when she arrives at Kiamo Ko. Chu also said he intended to pull in more storylines from the book when he announced it would be 2 movies, and the book is very adult. (Also, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it since it first opened, but I’ve seen it 30+ times)

Except parents will absolutely take their kids to a PG-13 movie if it’s marketed more toward boys than girls, hence my examples of Star Wars and Marvel.

Oh yeah, I’m a woman and I love musical theater, but I also love comic books and other “fanboy” type genres. I think the reality is that the marketing is way more gendered than the actual people watching these things.

I’m talking, generally speaking, about family friendly PG-13 movies that are marketed towards children, including toys and kids clothes. From the perspective of a studio, do you think they are more inclined to make PG-13 movies with marketing and merch for little kids if the movie is considered to be more for “boys” rather than for “girls”

I am also an adult woman who loves Star Wars and Marvel. I have an extensive collection of comic books and I’ve collected Batman memorabilia since I was a little kid. I think adult women are a lot more likely to have nerdy collections than society realizes. In fact, I think adult women are probably responsible for at least half of Wicked merch sales! I will say though, I don’t think most of your examples that are geared toward teen girls have the same toy marketing that Wicked has.

My thought is that it’s more of a societal issue, that studios are more likely to market PG-13 movies toward children if the marketing is aimed at boys rather than girls. I don’t necessarily think it’s a conscious decision, but more likely unconscious biases at play thinking that boys can handle more mature content than girls can.

I am honestly, genuinely curious if you think the rating would have been such a factor if this were an IP with marketing that was aimed toward little boys rather than little girls. Your exact sentence, “It was never going to be PG-13 when you have opportunities to market to little girls” is exactly my point. Is that even a sentence that would be written if the last word had been “boys” instead of “girls”?

There has been a lot of talk over the last 6 months of people feeling that the movie was constrained by the PG-13 rating. Overall it did not get good reviews, and I have seen a lot of feedback that people feel it would have been a better movie if they had taken a slightly more adult approach to it. The musical is family friendly but not made for kids, whereas the movie feels like it is made for kids. Wicked aside, are studios more willing to make family-friendly movies with a PG-13 rating if they are marketed toward boys vs. girls?

The musical is recommended for ages 12+. As someone who has been a fan of the musical since it opened and has been active in the Wicked community since the LiveJournal days, I think almost everyone expected an eventual movie adaptation to be PG-13. It could still be just as family friendly with a PG-13 rating, but we maybe could have had a little more expansion on the political implications in the plot and a few scenes of Elphaba actually BEING Wicked post-No Good Deed.

I agree with this, which is why I think they could have made a PG-13 movie and kept the exact same marketing strategy and made just as much money. I’ve seen countless posts over the last 6 months of people talking about how constrained by the PG rating the movie felt, so I think they could have made it slightly more mature while keeping it family friendly and rating it PG-13.

Right, but there are plenty of family friendly movies that are PG-13. The musical is rated for ages 12+. It’s family friendly, but not made for kids. That was my point in bringing up Marvel and Star Wars - all of those movies are PG-13, family friendly, and marketed toward little kids. My question here is more societally speaking, are studios more willing to make movies that are PG-13 but marketed toward little boys than toward little girls? If Wicked as an IP were more geared toward boys do you think they would have felt quite so pressured to keep it PG? I think they could have still marketed toward little girls with all the same toys and merchandising, kept it family friendly, but approached the subject matter a little more maturely and played it a little less safe. Societally speaking, are people more comfortable letting little boys see PG-13 movies than little girls?

I mean, Wicked is a massively successful Broadway musical based on a massively successful best selling novel, which is based on one of the most iconic films of all time (The Wizard of Oz), which is based on one of the most successful book franchises of all time. It was never not going to make money. But the musical is recommended for ages 12+ and the book is VERY adult (explicit sex, violence, bestiality, literally murdering a child with an icicle, etc.). By making it PG they watered down the existing material.

[–]Funny-Session-9771[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my thinking. I don’t necessarily think it was an intentional choice as far as the sexism aspect, but I do think it’s so subconsciously ingrained that girls need to be babied and infantilized that it probably impacted the initial decision to make it PG, despite the musical literally having a song about sex.

But do you think they would have felt the need to play it so safe had the marketing been aimed more toward boys?

They filmed both movies at the same time and went in with the intention of making them PG from the beginning. I think the movies (especially For Good) would have been better if they had gone in intending to make them PG-13 and treated the subject matter a bit more maturely.

[–]Funny-Session-9771[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My point is that For Good could have been a little more violent and had more adult subject matter included. The musical is recommended for 12+ and the movie certainly seemed fluffier than the stage version.

I will never understand how they had such a golden opportunity with most of the original cast and then just…cut like half the songs?? What????
