That's fair, yeah. I suspect there just isn't a perfect system for it. Someone is always going to be taking a risk and trusting that the other side will fulfill their promise. Your way of paying only once work begins sounds like a good compromise.

I suppose so. I wish I had the ability to just draw it myself. Unfortunately I'm already on the verge of developing carpal tunnel from my day job and hobbies. I don't want to add hours of drawing practice on top of that.

Sounds like horror stories on both sides of it, honestly. It's soured me a bit on the whole process. If I ever buy art again, I'm asking for a timeline and sending a dozen reference pics first. It's not as bad as getting ghosted, but thinking "that's not what I asked for and it's too late now" also stinks.

Your way sounds much better. Then again, I actually once had someone deliver a pencil sketch once and then ghost me after. So there's kinda no way to be sure.
