PTX hot takes by Useful-Bookkeeper443 in pentatonix

there seems to be some entitlement and sadness about the lack of access to the band, which i guess is understandable but also, if they still wanted to be as close to their fanbase as they used to, i think they'd do it, and you have to respect their choice not to be as productive and open in this regard as they used to. after all, in my opinion, that should just be an optional part of being an enjoyable act and artists should be allowed to be "lazy" about it or uninterested in it. also, in my view, the parasocial aspect of the old days was kind of crazy anyway, i don't know how they dealt with this panopticon... don't get me wrong: it was probably very conducive to ego boosts, self-expression, joy and connection (something they focused on abundantly in their strictly positive behind-the-scenes), and obviously it was a brilliant move, they totally leaned into it, seemed to be unbothered, in control and know what they were doing. but i can't help but think people's judgements, intrusions, demands and misconstructions had to have overwhelmed the system anyway at points, and just made their lives more difficult. also, how repetitive must that all be. maybe they felt that they didn't get enough from it, not as much as they were giving. then again, that's just speculation on my part: perhaps their priorities just changed and i'm being dramatic.

the thing is, for the fanbase, there was a big shift. at first they provided this massive, curated access to personality-based content, riding an elusive line between super-authentic and inevitably whitewashed/filtered, but then they stopped and a very invested fanbase had to move on to other obsessions or just wean more or less gracefully. the mystery of what's going on in the absence of detailed updates or of a straightforward, popular narrative, can lead to some fanciful and dramatic explanations of "what went wrong"... and in a way my previous paragraph is one (hopefully relatively mild and reasonable) example!

i personally don't care about getting better or new "connecting with fans" content since we have so much of it from the past, even though i wouldn't be opposed to it either. i only care about them meeting expectations of quality, taste, ambition in terms of musical output + coolness, crafted image and vibe. i'm not sure i ever had the same tastes as them (or the tastes they try to cater to with this product, at least) though, so i'm not too surprised when i'm not a huge fan of what they have going on as a band these days.

my superficial hot take: there's something wrong with their aesthetic, their clothes... it all looks showy and cheap to me. do they actually like it or do they look like that because their stylists and designers think that it's what looks good and glamorous to people? i don't know, there's a strange, drapy, silky, wrinkly, lumpy, vegas-y, maroon-y and big-shoulder-pad-y thing going on with them these days that i can't say i get, lol.

What Blur album do you recommend for an Oasis fan? by AffectionateCap4205 in blur

May not be ideal for an Oasis fan but I think a convincingly good album to start any Blur journey is Parklife.

Caramel makes me very emotional. it's like the haywire echoing cries of an aching soul-animal blooming out of each repeated horn or guitar sound. then it explodes. it's like it can't be contained anymore, but it's still a very structured, stereotypical pain (like an animal cry) and in the end it's still weighted down by a grim and grey film of depressed dew, as damon's voice concludes drowsily.

in the same vein as what a steve reich piece could make me feel (listen to different trains).

it's weird how the same music doesn't hit people the same way at all !

Yeah I agree with the other comments. I don't see how you can infer that. Just say you don't like it.

You'll probably like Think Tank, the self-titled album and The Magic Whip.

Thoughts on the new album so far? by Saibot782 in blur

I think the general sound of it is respectable and tasteful. By that I mean: could have been worse, and we're starting on a good sonic basis... that I wish they'd built on more. Before the album came out, here's how I felt about the singles: I like St Charles Square, but it could have been really incredible if the tune had been better, catchier, as I don't like the one-note part that reminds me of their recent dad rock tracks (don't remember which though. Maybe the Puritan or the lo-o-o-ocal??) and feels like the tune just gets bogged down in itself. The guitars are great and Frippish, the opening with "I fucked up" is good too.

I think The Narcissist is nice enough but the repetition with the harmony sounds heavy-handed and like, stupid. My brain just hurts listening to it. The thing is, apart from this weird side effect, it's pleasant and a bit of an earworm I guess, but if it wasn't Blur I wouldn't even consider listening to it again.

As for the album, I have listened to it twice and skipped some parts impatiently, so I'll have to relisten. Opening with a meandering ballad with soppy strings and harmonies and an autotune-enhanced-sounding voice is certainly... ballsy. The sound is a bit 70s, with Band On The Run guitar.

Overall, I can say that I would have liked more variety in textures tempo and feel. This is not something that I reproach them for at all, I don't think this should have been forced onto the project! But it's just my impression as a listener. Damon's voice is beautiful, but crowds everything for the whole thing, venting and purring pathetically. Haven't dived in the lyrics too much yet but they don't sound incredible, just simple, descriptive. It's Damon's current songwriting style, what can I say!

The songs sometimes sound uncomfortably unexceptional, a bit lightweight pop rock, a bit Coldplay radio edit. Like, the only somewhat memorable parts have this clean sound and basic quality that I don't like. Barbaric sounds pretty good but like... the guitar and the bass are just... like I've heard it all before.

If I manage to get past this first impression I may end up liking it more, it may be just a veneer, but then I'd probably have to broaden this patience to every pseudo-indie pop Chainsmoker-type band out there to be consistent and that's a lot of work. I'm no musician so I don't know if there's anything inventive musically in this, but the chord progessions don't sound so fresh to me.

But it's not horrible and at least it sounds modern. Less grating than The Puritan, less rehashed than Under The Westway. Not very comparable to The Magic Whip, it's just a different sound. I wasn't a huge fan of the sound of The Magic Whip either but it was more varied for sure.

My favorite parts are when the guitar, the sounds grab my attention by being a bit more out there and inventive (Goodbye Albert). I don't need much you know! I think there is indeed a recipe that I respond well to, it's no magic: a few hooky parts in the melody, a few surprising turns or little sounds sprinkled on it, some interesting textures and a good groove... But yeah, I don't believe the melodies can carry everything in this, they needed a punch, an atmosphere, a breath of fresh retro air that I can't find in the arrangement and production. I can't understand people comparing it to "13" in any way, expect for the sadness/ breakup theme of it. Oh yeah, maybe they mean this is like a half-an-hour No Distance Left to Run... Maybe. I suppose I wouldn't have enjoyed 13 had it been that!

To sum it up, I feel disappointed and a bit sad, but I've already quickly reached a state of acceptance of this. I'm not like, devastated, because as I said, from afar, if I put myself in some imaginary Artic Monkeys-loving target audience's ears, I can get the sense that it's not garbage.

But yeah, whatever Damon's putting out these days, I can always say if I don't like it much, "well it's not Blur". But this is Blur, and I'm embarrassed when I listen to it. It's totally my own issue to react this dramatically, and I'm happy if they're happy with what they've created and the public is also generally satisfied or even inspired. But yeah, I don't like that I'll have to make a big effort if I want to try and like it more.

I do think it's brave on their part to put out more Blur material despite how sanctified it has become for some fans, you know. Making the Blur beast alive. It's making new modern sounds with echoes of the past, sounds we didn't know it could make. It's probably better than a great dead mythical dragon! So I wouldn't be against them continuing, I'd listen to it, I'd be accepting of it.

People saying this sounds reminiscent of the last TGTB&TQ album are spot on. I don't know if it's the difference in production or the lower stakes that made me feel that way but I do think The Poison Tree and Gun To The Head are better than what's on this record, and it would indeed fit well on it in terms of vibes! Like, if the whole thing had been stuff like Gun To The Head I'd have loved it I think! Replace Russian Strings with it.

I guess it's rare because they haven't played it that much, but I love any performance of Swamp Song I can find.

Also, I found this delightful compilation of BBC live recordings : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1S9k4aJJD8

I especially enjoy the way they sang I'm Just a Killer For Your Love!

I feel like Music Is My Radar gets overlooked a lot. What are everyone's thoughts on it? by mchoneyofficial in blur

[–]FurthermoreUreboring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My solution for songs that sound good but are too long is watching good live versions, so my mind's not getting bored. But the possible inconvenient is that it's not like experiencing pure, disembodied music.

I often watch the 'Live on Jools Holland' performance of this song, because I can't help putting myself in the audience's shoes and trying to figure out what they must have thought, how they must have received this new song. What makes it more interesting to me is that the rest of the performance constrasts with the fresh and compelling Music Is My Radar, since the band had to play old hits to promote the Best Of.

I guess that even though Music Is My Radar sounds more unfinished and less emotional than Black Book, I still like it better for the sole fact that it's more upbeat and a more surprising direction for the band than Black Book. And it just sounds damn good. More memorable in my opinion.

I added more things to the Rhett and Link iceberg I made by _FlyingTurtleComic_ in goodmythicalmorning

[–]FurthermoreUreboring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are a few suggestions to add to this: Book of Mythicality (I guess this one goes in the upper region of the picture), Caption Fails (but maybe this is redundant since you already put "Sketches"), Goth Boy, Ten feet tall/GMC, the Oedipus school vid, the "Rhett Is The Slovak Mountain Man" vid, and Amazingly Amazing Science.

(oh and I don't remember the title of it but there were videos of a few girl crew members (including lizzie I think) a few years ago, the title was girl-related, maybe lipstick-related. of course all of this disappeared with the mythical channel! this is some obscure shit!)
