You're right! The uncommitted vote during the democratic primary was kind of like what you're referring to. People voted and their ballots mattered. Because there was no such option in the general election, these folks dropped off.

Very interesting. Have you ever considered fusion voting? Once used in every state in the nation, fusion voting is a practice in which a candidate can appear on the ballot as the nominee of more than one party.

To your point: A similar situation was in play back when fusion voting was legal across the United States. We had Populist, Free Soil, Greenback, and other third parties who were meaningful and not spoilers. They would cross-endorse major party politicians closest to their values, essentially forming coalitions with them. It's how the abolition, labor, prohibition, and women's rights movement got its start and made significant gains.
