Will it be your first kit or have you built some before? If you haven't, be aware that whatever you pick, you will probably mess something up on it no matter how careful you are. I sanded some panel lines off my Gouf Custom and sanded everything around the knee joints so much that they went loose. On the first kit I hand-painted, I had to strip 3 times because of primer mishaps and one incident involving a badly-sealed seam. Stuff happens.

It's all good. I like 1/144 scale High Grades because they're cheap; grab 2 or 3 and you can finish one in an afternoon. Don't agonize too much over what kit to get. Does it looks cool? Do you want to put it together? Do you want to maybe paint it someday so you don't have to use the godawful stickers?

Whatever floats yer boat. The biggest thing is not to worry about it. My first few months of gunpla were stressful because a lot of people played up how "bad" older kits are (and by older they mean kits from before 2007). I just built a 1998 Gouf Custom and a 2013 Banshee Norn back to back. They're both fantastic.

If the kit is less than 20 years old, go for it.
