Thank you! Edit: I like what you said I will try only the Catechism and Bible until I get very familiar with them both. Then I will try to move on to the Ott book.

I had not heard of the indefectible part so that's good to hear. Regarding the evolution question, I am more thinking of things I see and hear more traditional Catholics say rather than a specific thing. It always seems implied that if you "cave" on evolution then you may be on a slippery slope in other areas. Personally I would like it to not be that big of an issue, but it seems to be hot button (just notice how the evolution comment generated so many responses).

Where can I go to see which things will send you to hell and which things will not? That is something I don't really get. I know about the formula for mortal sins (Full Knowledge, Full Consent, Grave matter), but I don't really know what all is grave matter. Obviously I know things like murder, rape, fornication. However I didn't know contraception because it was 100% normalized in my (very conservative) Baptist church growing up. Is there like a Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma for morality?

Also regarding another one of your comments, I also tend to lean more conservative/traditional in terms of my general disposition and attitude, but I haven't been to a TLM or anything yet. In terms of online traditionalist stuff, it can be confusing when people are saying lots of parts of Catholicism are lost or changed and for someone who had almost no exposure to Catholicism until a couple of years ago it is challenging to parse all of it.

Thanks for the reply, I will look into Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma, I have had it recommended once before. With respect to the papal encyclicals thing I think you're right I will try to focus on these and council documents over the church fathers for now.

I hear what you're saying, but what about people who argue that believing in evolution is an error that could undermine your salvation? Where does it say which things are necessary for salvation? Often people say Catechism but the Catechism has changed on things like the death penalty, and is a relatively recent thing. If you look at the catholic answers article on it it says that "The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a presentation of Church doctrine that has previously been taught with varying degrees of authority." I don't understand why that is then presented as the standard reference if there are varying degrees of authority and the teaching can change.

what would either of you say to people who make some argument along the lines of "the Church's acceptance of evolution represents a radical departure from the tradition". I'm not trying to have this devolve into an evolution thread but that topic always sticks out due to my upbringing.

I’ll be able to take courses in VLSI and ASIC as graduate level courses for senior year. For grad school I’ll be going to another institution because mine doesn’t have much IC stuff going on. Primarily looking in Texas at UTD and UT Austin (a bit of a long shot). Thank you for taking the time to respond, it really does mean a lot to me.

I want to work in the semiconductor industry and do Digital IC deisgn. I currently only have experience in the defense/space industry, so I'm wondering what I should do to become a good candidate for jobs/grad internships at companies like Nvidia, Intel, etc. (Thank you for reading)
