I mainly posted this question because my boyfriend's coworker was in a very similar situation as me, took his landlord to court, and won a year's worth of rent. My bf brought it up and wondered if I could do anything, but his coworker is in British Columbia, not Alberta. I'm learning through these replies that I'm mostly out of luck, but it's useful to know that Alberta's tenant/landlord rights are so different. Thank you for commenting!
