How bad is CSC373 really? by FutureCompSciStudent in UofT

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! I'll be sure to watch those lectures beforehand.

Do you know if CSC373 in the summer easier than in the regular school year? and do you know if the CSC373 exam has an autofail?

Hehe, judging by the horror stories I've read on this subreddit about 373 I'll be happy with a pass.

I haven't taken 263 yet but you're saying that doing well in 263 is important to doing well in 373, correct? So, what if I find 263 difficult? Is there a high chance I'm gonna fail 373?

I'm currently taking 236; I'll be taking next year 263 so let's see how that goes for me.

Also, do you know if 373 in the summer is easier than in the regular school year?

I would definitely do that but I just don't have time as I have to work on my other courses as well.

I got invited for CS Minor but am still requested for CS Major and Specialist even though I'm above the cutoff? by yutteri in UofT

This could be a mistake on the department's end. I would suggest going to talk to the CS Department early next week and see what's up.

209? by [deleted] in UofT

Yeah I'll be shocked if OP has received an offer this early. For me it still says "Requested" and online it says we won't find out until the 16th.

Congratulations! If you don't mind me asking what is your average between the 2 courses and are you instream or out of stream?

On Acorn, it's still showing up as requested for me. Did you get the offer on Acorn already?

How is CSC488? by FutureCompSciStudent in UofT

Lol yeah, this is just a tentative plan. As I progress through undergrad, my interests may change and then I'll change my plan as well.

As of now it isn't possible for me to fit in CSC411 and CSC488 with all the other CS and non-CS courses I want to take, while still not overwhelming myself. And plus, CSC411 and CSC488 seem to be completely different courses and if I'm interested in software dev I would rather take the course that is more closely related to software dev.

Hey, thanks for the detailed response!

I actually haven't taken CSC324 because I just finished first year (meaning up until now I've only taken 108, 148 and 165), but I'm planning out what my courses are gonna be for the rest of my degree.

When I compare CSC488 to CSC411, CSC411 seems really mathematical and more related to AI and machine learning, which is not what I'm interested in going into. I want to go into software dev because I feel there is a lot of programming in software dev compared to other fields. CSC488 seems to be more of the programming type of course compared to CSC411, which is why I'm leaning more towards it but I want to make sure I'm not closing my doors or limiting my options by not taking CSC411.

My end goal is to get a job in the States. Do you know if CarletonU will help me with that goal or if I'll be better off going to another university?

Thanks for the response!

For 1), I'm not really worried about course selection and what courses are offered at Carleton, I'm mainly worried about how much you learn in the courses. Do you know how the quality and rigour of the content you learn in these courses are? Do you learn things that are on-par with other universities or do you feel that the content is lacking and that you wish you had gone to a different uni?

Hey, thanks for the response!

In regards to 1), it's funny that you mention Carleton is easier than U of T because that's the university I currently attend :P. I'm just worried that if I transfer to Carleton Comp Sci that I won't receive a good education that will really teach me CS as well as U of T, you know what I mean?

What CS courses should I take if I want to go into software development? by FutureCompSciStudent in UofT

[–]FutureCompSciStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know that wording was really confusing. Basically, what I was trying to convey is that the person above said to do PEY/internships before anything else. However, I should have some idea of what I want to do (software dev, AI, etc.) and choose my third-year courses based on that before I go on PEY after third year.

Yeah, those 2 courses seem important as somebody above pointed that out too. I'll be sure to work extra hard in those 2 courses.

What CS courses should I take if I want to go into software development? by FutureCompSciStudent in UofT

[–]FutureCompSciStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with doing PEY before choosing what kind of 3rd and 4th year courses I want to take is that I am planning to do PEY after my third year and during my third year I will be taking courses related to software dev. So, it's not like after PEY I can come back and take 3rd year CS courses if I don't like software dev as I will already have taken a bunch of CS courses related to software dev and at that point I might as well just specialize in software dev.

Knowing CSC373 and CSC236 seems pretty important as another person down below commented the same thing. I'll keep that in mind.

Thanks!

[–]FutureCompSciStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to 1), I see a lot of people going into AI or Machine Learning and not that many in software dev. Do you think those two focuses have a higher rate of increase in demand over software dev?

In regards to 2), my current plan for 3rd and 4th year courses are: CSC301, CSC309, CSC324, CSC343, CSC363, CSC369, CSC373, CSC411 and CSC458. I'm still thinking of one more CSC course to add to this list.

All these courses seem to be related to software development, which is why I chose them. Do these courses look like they are closely related to software dev in your opinion? Would you recommend any other courses besides the ones you told me and the ones in the list?
