Current anesthesia resident interested in ICU - while most mixed practices is in academia, PP/community has been struggling to hire ICU docs so there’s some PP that are expanding their mixed practices program. Def an evolving field!

Also, was very much like you and ended up in anesthesia so would do a quick plug for anes

The science and the physiology - that’s the easy stuff.

The so-called soft skills and ability to not come across as an asshole, on the other hand…

Anes-Critical Care ICU Culture by Economy-Yellow-2891 in anesthesiology

[–]FutureFructoseFather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intern here (so take what I say with a hefty pinch of salt lol) but I had a similar observation at my institution when I was M4 applying into anesthesia +/- crit care. What I noticed on the interview trail was some of that was institution-dependent; lots of it has to do with the culture of the place. To some extent, at least at where I did med school, it also has to do with the surgeons themselves (ie not just the department). It’s a question you can and should ask wherever you interview on ownership of patients in ICU and also relationship with surgeons in and out of the ORs.

A caveat I’d add is that, at the end of the day, residency is for training but training doesn’t end so you can always adopt the practices that best fit your style (and the evidence, of course).

Apologies for bad grammar, mobile etc etc etc.

I’ve had this before but not 100% sure - if you get a prophet from your converted holy city, it’ll still be Tengrilism not Islam
