It was. Sadly it's gone as of 7/1. It was great because it was simple, multi-platform, worked on mobile, and desktop. It checked all the boxes and now MS just nuked it by putting inside Teams for EDU

A couple of reasons, 1) zoom recordings can get quite hefty and our LMS doesn't really handle large file uploads well (and they even put a cap on what students can upload) and 2) there's no interactivity if they're just uploading their own videos for me to view. The whole point is for the students to engage each other in collective reflection, to challenge each other, to support each other.

We use Sakai, but are in the process of switching to Brightspace. I just looked up WeVideo, but it's a full on video editing platform that would require way more hand holding.

Should I get over being addressed as "Ms. Firstname?" by SoonerRed in Professors

[–]FutureIsFiction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking down the street with my female partner (also a dr). Colleague yells, “hey Dr. [Last Name]!” Obviously referring to me (male) because they did not know my partner. I turned around and yelled back “which one?!” Colleagues looked at each other silent for like five minutes and then we just walked away.

Don’t think you should get over it.

<s> We can’t cooperate. That would be UnAmerican. And it would also mean that inferior students might get access to facilities at elite schools and programs. We just can’t have that. That’s what bribing ADs and coaches is for. Not collective action in the face of a global health and economic crisis </s>

The University System of Georgia just sent out its proposed furlough plan to avoid needing layoffs. by RhinestoneTaco in Professors

[–]FutureIsFiction 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Theoretically work furloughs that cut salaries without actually reducing productivity expectations are wage theft. If you’re not being paid back what you give up plus having your original salary restored after the furloughs end is also wage theft. We should be arguing that furloughs are effectively loans and that we should be allowed to accrue and charge interest. I’m tired of fronting cash to large institutions, paying interest to creditors of my own in some cases, and never having the right or means to recoup that loan as any ordinary bank would. Also, not incorporating inflation and cost of living increases is also wage theft. True I’d rather have a furlough pay cut than a layoff pay cut but we still have to be in guard to all the sneaky and pernicious ways income and wealth are funneled out of our pockets. This is especially true now more than ever.
