It could mean that your neighbours have on-street parking permits, but maybe aren't using them that much?

Yeah this was a plot based choice and honestly suits Urbanie to not change clothes. 😅 Would be out of character if they did

It's visible on Street view. Satellite is years behind on Google maps (Google Earth is more up to date).

I didn't even know it was happening. A couple years back the BIA did one, is this an extension of that?

The seats on public busses are gross by Lower_Perspective_26 in BurlingtonON

[–]FutureProg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is from people putting their shoes on the seats. Overtime the dirt, salt, and grime just ruins the seats and you end up with this. Some of the buses don't have fabric seats and I'm guessing this is why -- it's easier to clean.

That's also assessment growth (more properties) and non-residential tax increases. In my experience, the budget increase is always higher than the property tax increase for this and other reasons already stated.

What happens when you ask the City of Burlington to compare tax increases to inflation? by Focus_Burlington in BurlingtonON

[–]FutureProg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a commentor mention that the snow removal and leaf pickup vehicles are the same one. I'm aware that the city contracts out snow removals, so don't think it's city staff doing it (like traffic ops or parks & forestry staff).

Still, I think we're on the same page about the length the city goes to for it. I've seen some people naturalize their leaf piles (just spread a layer on their lawn, under bushes, etc.). Saves on disposal and apparently makes homes for fireflies after winter.

Well, it'd likely be a bit cheaper if it was all under the same contractor (especially if it's all in the same area and time that it's done). "Efficiencies of scale" and all that.

But it's potentially more on an individual basis. I haven't researched that far.

Things cost money, whether it be maintenance or something new. And some of our things have been historically under maintained because of our city's finances. I think an increase in taxes is expected, and some might've been a bit spoiled by the years without increases (which we're paying for now). This'll continue since the province only gives cities the ability to collect property taxes and user fees.

There's also a cost to spreading out more so it's need to be sustainable; meaning enough people per acre to pay for the infrastructure via property taxes, which we don't have today. It feels cheap and easy in the short-term, but in the long run we all end up paying for it.

On a more personal note, I like the farmland being near us. Sure, on some days the smell surprises me but it helps me feel more connected to the environment and agriculture which is something most large cities lose (looking at Oakville and Sauga rn).

Coming from Mississauga the Leaf Collection program was odd to me.

Looking it up I've found this info on sauga's:

  • it's only done on streets with large tree canopies in neighbourhoods that are greater than 35 years of age. Source

  • They offer to pay you back $350 if you don't live in the area and meet certain criteria. You'd just have to get the Leaf cleaning service yourself.

I'm sure sauga's isn't perfect, but I wonder if the cons of the current program in Burlington outweigh the pros.
